Picked up these juvies last July at about 50 cent size, thinking they got to be about a year old?

A 50 cent piece is just a little over 1" so the discus should have been between 1 and 2 months old if they were raised in good condition. This would mean they wouldn't be 1 year till around May or June.

so you think I'm off by a couple months? You are probably right. Picked them up mid July, you might be right on Larry.

Thanks Ryan,
There are currently in a major growth spurt and they are piling on the pounds! Even the runt has really come on the last couple months.

Actually, those photos don't do them justice! Much more vibrant in real life.

Great progression and development Neptune .
Job well done .
I would like to see a photo of thetime when you first got them . It would be a great comparison with the current pics youve uploaded here. Or maybe a couple of progression photos through the months all togetger in this thread would be even better .

I'll give it a shot.

Here is the tank before discus. I wanted a planted tank with angelfish and cories.

My kid kept bugging me to do discus. Then a local breeder was getting out of the biz and had a bunch of heckel cross for $15 a piece. I jumped on it jumped the gun! All I could do was throw them in the tank as is.
Then I had to go out of town for work. The tank went through a diatom bloom but I only lost one fish. Here it is right before the redo.

While I was out of town I had a lot of nights in the hotel room so I read and read on here. i knew I had to redo my tank when I got home. Then on the same weekend as Ryan952 redid his tank, I redid mine. Here it is in August just hours after the redo.

Nice job man. When you see them everyday you don't fully grasp the growth. Having the progress pictures is so cool to see their journey.

They are in a big growth spurt right now, you can tell they are putting on the pounds. I don't know if its the age or the food. I switched to Al's Discus Chow and they are bulking up!

I'd say age. Mine started to really thicken up. My cobalt that was way behind at one point is one of the largest with a fat head now lol

Great chronology pics Neptune .
Its amazing how much brighter they have become once youve transfered them on the sandy bottom.
Keep up the good work Neptune . They are still young and got some growing to do .

Nice job. They are shaping and coloring up nicely. Can definitely tell they are putting on that thickness now.

I was really happy when mine got to that point. My cobalt is getting so thick now the others don't even come close to his size now and I had thought I stunted him

Great work with these guys! I remember when you got them, you did not get a lot of encouragement about their quality, but you have really turned them into stunning fish. Even the runt is putting on weight! Thanks for the update, I love to see this kind of success..

That blue sheen gets me every time, so very unique... Is that the same fish in each picture just zoomed in or is that each a different fish.

I agree with Eric, they were a real mixed bag when you got them and a few had some funky shapes, but you stuck with it and they are turning out nice. Either way you can't beat that color!

It is the same fish. She/he is top dog.
Here are a couple more, you can tell they are getting that nice sheen but have a ways to go.

Great job on this thread- don't know how I missed it. Love watching them grow by just scrolling! Instant gratification. What a difference the tank redo made- reminds me of Ryan's.

The fish are gorgeous. You are doing a wonderful job with them. Now that they are gaining in size they will beef up a bit too. It is interesting how when that happens they loose the point on their face and it becomes more round. You can see it happening in the last few pics. Can't wait to see them over the next few months.

Really wonderful Neptune . Their colors just leap out at you and feeding them Al's discus chow you can't miss . All my fish love it, even the tetras and the cories are eating it. Your discus are really beautiful. Great job.

Could not have done it with your inspiration and the rest of the folks here! It sure is nice to have them to a point where you can really enjoy them and not stress about every little thing.

I remember being stuck in a hotel about this time last year and just reading reading reading!

Now for the question, the guy who sold them to me said he thought they were Heckell cross. Not being an expert, but should they have a bar down the middle if a Heckell cross?

Yes . A Heckel cross usually refers that offsprings should have a thick black middle bar or at least a hint of it .
