I'm going to start my 550 gallon tank back up with Discus. I'm looking for some good advise on what I should use for filtering the tank. Right now I know I will have a RO system that will automatically take out tank water and put back in RO water. Thinking of using Hamburg style filteration bit open to all suggestions.

If I could afford to setup a 550 gallon tank I would not want the filter inside the viewing area. I would want a sump so I could put my heaters, filter material, etc. out of sight.

Or a few big canisters like the FX6 or Eheim 2080/2180

Hi Celstar and welcome .
I would agree with other suggestions about keeping your filtration out of your giant display tank for a better aesthetics.
Sump would be my no1 choice but x 2 strong canister filters such as FX 6 will certainly do the job too.
I would love to see pictures once you start this huge discus project .

Does anyone use a Skimmer on a Discus tank!

I do! Skimmer to external bean animal to 29 gallon sump. Love it.
And just bought the Eshopps Eclipse skimmer overflow for my new 65 setup.

You can use the matten filters to divide up the sump. I would use a 125 gallon tank and put several layers of matten foam, start with 10, then 20, followed by 30 or 45. In between you can put more media, heaters, k1 whatever you want
