Is it possible to just add tank water from the display tank to the QT tank as opposed to adding a hero fish?

why not just age water in the QT tank with a heater and air stone and treat it with a dechlorinater?

It won't be as effective but its better than nothing. The problem is pathogen concentration may be very low in the water.... so the response may take way too long or not at all.

Also the hero fish is not just for the new fish in QT, but also to protect the fish in your display. "Hero Fish" will tell if the newcomers bring anything new to your system.
