what is the best way to cure driftwood

Getting things ready , was wondering the best way to cure driftwood?

Boil
or
Soak
or both.

I have two very large pieces of wood soaking in a tub right now. They have been in there a week and still floating. So get the stuff soaking way in advance of aquascape day!

Depends on the size. You may not be able to boil them. If not then soak them in a large tote or trash can. As the water starts to get stained with tannin empty and refill with fresh water

Boiling is the best, but sometimes difficult due to shape and size. I have a large pot for canning and a camping stove, which allowed me to boil my huge piece of driftwood, but I had to do it in halves, as half of it was always sticking out of the pot. In total it took 4 hours, but was worth it. It has never had fungus and sinks like a rock.

A bag of purigen in your filter will take care it. Might take a month or so. After that, regular water changes will keep it at unnoticable levels.

Tannins are not harmful and actual can be good for the fish. If you don't mind yellow water it's fine

You will see wild bio tope tanks with intentionally stained water

If it's too big for soaking;bake it in the oven at about 200 degrees.Curing usually means drying it out.Most of the salt water beach stuff is already cured and ready to use.
