Just wondering has anyone kept a discus or 2 in a 20 gallon or so? Does this work?

A pair of discus sure or for a hospital tank sure.

Otherwise no and..... why?

Thinking down the future I would like to get a show quality discus, and would like to keep it separate from the others.

A nice looking proven pair with some other small dietherfish tankmates can be tolerable and may look nice in a 20 -30 G showtank , IMO .

I mean I guess... Just doesn't seem fair or right to the fish, especially a "show fish" to basically live his days out in a solitary cell.

Could the fish survive and be fine, I am sure, with proper care, naturally the fish just wants to live. However, socially and for the type of fish they are, it may not be the best choice.

I'd go Filip's route, get a show quality pair and make it look nice and happy for them.

Some Discus deserves to live in a solitary cell, just cause they are a-holes.

I have kept singles in a twenty's and a thirty. You do need to change at least 80% of the water a day. If you are going away on vacation and there will be no water changes in the 20 for 4-5 days FORGET IT. You will have a dead fish. don't ask how I know. In a 30 you will be pushing it with no WC for 4-5 days. I kept a very large Brown Discus in a 30 long back in the 80's he liked it there by himself. He did not like to be with the other fish in the larger tanks, but in the thirty he was very content and more active and personable.
