I'm about to tank my discus tank to the next level and have a filtration question! I have a large sponge filter and a Aqueon 75 filler. I also was using a marineland large filter. The marineland had started having starting up issues. Do I really need to use this filter? I have a 90 Gallon tank. Can I use get rid of this filter?

What's going to be in the tank...??

I may try and get a bigger HOB. Yoi could get away with what you have and a good water change regiment. But I'd still gob bigger if possible.

What is Hob? Also my main filter is rated at 90 gallon and my tank is 90 Gallon. Also I do have a large sponge filter in the tank. Is it really still not enough? Thank you for your reply

HOB = hang on back

Can't always go by the rating. My filter is rated for 160g and I have it on a 75g

Out of curiosity do you have any power heads in the tank?

I bought a Seachem tidal 110 for my 55 on a recommendation from this forum. Love it, has a surface skimming feature that's awesome.

Just wanted to say I have bought 2 other hydor koralia pumps. I just got the koralia evolution 850. The pumps were good before but the quality of the newer version seems much much better

I think you'll be fine with the Aqueon 75 and sponge filter for your tank. Bottom line are frequent water changes for discus fish. Good luck and keep us updated on your progress, just do them water changes and everything will be good.

Sponge filters are good however using them alone will require more water changes. I personally prefer canister filters. Especially the Fluval FX4/FX5/FX6. Hang on back filters are good also. I like the Marineland Penguin series. I use the Penguin series along with sponge filters for breeding discus and have gotten good results.
