Well, you'll never see a "fire red" in the Amazon. You should be fine to breed at least a couple generations deep if the stock is good to begin with. After a while, you start playing coin flip with recessive genes.

Livebearers are a bit of an exception. There are fish at the Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center that are well over 100 generations old and doing just fine.

Theres nothing wrong with doing this. Its a common practice actually in many husbandry circles though sibling crosses are more common.. In all practicality and The long time to maturation of discus most/no? hobbyists will ever see major genetic degradation of discus from breeding to the parents or siblings. Depending on the parent stocks genetics though you never know what you will get if they are mixed lines to begin with. It can be a good tool though to try and reverse engineer how the parents were made. If. that is one were patient, had many empty tanks and was a sucker for punishment!:evilgrin:
