i was chatting with a few folks at NADA, and I mentioned my garden. Here's a few pics. The first is a pano, then a few locals.

very nice! I wish we had that much backyard here in LA. You'd easily get in to the $700-$800k based on that back yard alone, lol.

Thanks, yes, but we don't really want that to happen to our neighborhood yet!

Thanks Joe. It was fun getting to chat.

I actually re-did the garden to remove some things I didn't want, including some invasive non-native milkweed. I don't have any milkweed this year, and I haven't seen a single Monarch! I have to be happy with the Swallowtails and Admirals :)

Wonderfully large yard & garden - like Ricardo, I wish I had one like yours - mine's all of 70' wide X only 25' deep.

Yes, I have three different varieties I collected. One, possibly the second, are native.

I could look up the name, but it's the narrow leaf that is native.

Lovely garden Steve. I need that heron to put by my pond to scare away others. Sure looks real. Hope you get lots of good eats from that garden!

SO, here's the heron today, in the middle of the butterfly garden.

You have to use your imagination, and maybe zoom in, but this is about a 180 pano, from the back.

The Death Trap. My cat sits in the foliage waiting for hummingbirds at the nasturtiums.

None of the pics are as clear as I'd like. I may try to update them.

I think the one called common milkweed, large leaves, tall stalks, is from the mid-eastern part of the country. It "doesn't play nice" in the garden, spreads through rhizomes(?). The "narrow-leaf" and "showy" varieties are native. I did get a few volunteers to come back this season and the monarchs did show up recently. I have eggs and larva now. With any luck I'll find a chrysalis or two in time to take to my grandkid's school this fall.

I'm a semi-retired teacher; still get summers off. So now I'm just bragging. I look out from my patio and see green all day. It is our bit of paradise.

Uh-oh, not a good sign. Not a cloud in the sky. That's a fire plume.

I may have been too hasty. It might be a thunderhead. I see more clouds behind it once I get past my trees. Not necessarily a better thing.

How is the nearby fire situation now Steve? Air still smoky in your city?

It's day to day. We've had a couple days of breezes that have cleared the smoke out of the valley during the day, but it still settles in overnight. Can't really see the foothills through the smoke. Luckily, none of the fires are real close to us, but I have dreams about it.

The fires are terrible. 3 lives lost and so many homes burned to the ground. The governor, Jerry Brown calls it the new normal.

RogueDiscus

Well, the winds changed or something worse. We're completely in smoke. Probably 100 yards visibility. It's probably area stuff blowing in, but if it were nearby, we'd never know.

Please stay safe, Steve.
