Since I got a couple of clown loaches I am not seeing any more snails in my 55G discus tank. But recently I noticed a handful in the sump :(
I want to get rid of them completely. Was contemplating nuking the tank and sump with potassium permanganate say 40ppm and removing the fish to a quarantine tank before hand for 5 hours.

the other option maybe less drastic and easier to do , is using a chemical with the fish inside. Anyone used azoo in an adult discus tank?
http://www.azoo-aqua.com/product-info.asp?id=236

PP I know will kill my biofilter and have to start from scratch and do a lot of water changes, but unsure of the azoo.

I have tried lettuce but in the sump its difficult to catch snails as I can see a few snails going around inside the filter floss.
The snails made to the the media balls chamber as well an I could see snail poo on the media
thanks

I think some dewormers with (in)correct dose also eradicate snails? Like fenbendazole, praziquantel or something.
At least you can keep your biofilter intact that way,
but you'll have to deal with those dead snails and later, ammonia spike I guess.

If you have no other invertebrates in the tank, copper based chemical (snail-rid etc.) is the surer way to go though.

Loach holiday in the sump?

Exactly! I have no experience here, but that was my first thought!

Assassin Snails, work really well. They don' t reproduce nearly as fast as the pest snails, and will live happily in your sump.

I‘ve used assasin snails before. When they finish eating all the snails, they eat each other-I had a bad infestation too.

I regularly put a snail trap in the tank. I use a Tetra Tabimin pellet a bait, but you can use any kind of pellet. Put the snail trap in the evening and in the morning you can collect them. You can also manufacture a trap by yourself with an empty plastic bottle of mineral water. It works very well for me and you don't disturb any proces in the tank.

Second suggestion for assassin snails.

Same here, had an infestation of Phisa snails in my planted tank, assassin snails soon cleared them then just went into extinction

I use canisters and after a HUGE infestation I decided to nuke everything and re-seed my bio filter with floss from a tank that had no snails. There was no way loaches or other predators would be able to get at everything in my tubing and also the canisters.

I nuked them thoroughly with about 8 oz. of regular bleach in my 60 gal. and was very satisfied to completely kill all snails.

This was my second go at this as the first time I didn't remove my planted sand planters and some of them escaped and repopulated, complete PIA to see them reappear but the 2nd time I didn't take any chances.
