Hi All

Hope everyone is well, just wanted to pick your fish lover brains with something I havent seen before - just got back into the hobby after a decade break and have had a tank running for 3/4 months - had a strange mini cycle peak in Nitrite so did some usual routine maintenance and a 50% water change, whilst doing this as the fish are juvenilles I have been feeding them quite heavy on beef heart and thought some may have become lodged in the canister decaying away- opened it up and sure enough the fine filter was clogged with some beef heart remains - however upon opening the filter i noticed this (pictures attached) what is it? Good? Bad? or ugly.

Thanks in advance for your help fish lovers 117447117448117449

Did you have the filter in a tank with java moss at some point?

Hi Adam

Thanks for the reply

No it’s a bare bottom plantless tank. It was a new filter on this tank, never been near plant life.

Try googling "slime molds or water molds, see what species it is.

Thanks Bluelagoon I’ve tried that but couldn’t find anything that looks like it. I’m guessing it’s not normal so something must have got in there - an unwelcomed Guest.

Has anyone else had or seen this before? I hope it’s not anything dangerous for Discus

Could be snail eggs? Do you have any snails in there?

Whatever it is, I doubt it's harmful. I'd spray it with peroxide and call it good.

Never seen this alien before but I'm pretty sure it's some harmless form of life such as fungus or mold.
Another thing I want to point is to never allow food to enter your filter and rot there . Use a prefilter sponge or floss , turn off the filters on timer during feedings and don't allow the food to go anywhere except in your discuss bellies.
