Jim since you started the kanamycin did it continue to get larger?

I would suggest netting the fish and swabbing the hole with iodine or hydrogen peroxide .. .

If the infection isnt responding to the kanamycin then it may not be the right medicine.. it may be better to try a different one. maracyn 1 and 2 combined is usually very effective on difficult bacterial problems... at the least maracyn 2 is woth trying(minocycline).

I would separate the fish though... if thats from one of the fin rot bacterias it can be very contagious.

I've had the same thing happen to one my active fish ! I did a PP bath and added her back to the tank (massive water change + salt). She looks horrible now with lots of broken fins. But she is eating healthy.

That is my experience.

Jim I think the package recommends 5 days. In the past i used it 10 days as the infection was improving but not quite over. I would suggest following the box and at completion judge if it looks better.

One note.. tetracycline related meds like this maracyn 2 is minocycline) Can make discus very jumpy. Be sure the tank is covered well.

hth,
Al
