I’ll be sanding down the rough spots on my new manzanita piece today. My tank has been looking so bare. Problem solved.

What an unusual and beautiful piece. I must see a picture of it in your tank.

Yeah it’s 1 piece. I finished sanding and pressure washing and I’m hoping to get it in the tank tonight. I’ll take a pic when I do. I’m hoping it fits between the braces on top. Thanks guys, I’m really tickled with it.

I'm worried about your top braces. I hope you can get that piece in. It looks huge!

Well it’s in, but not exactly how I wanted it placed. Ha ha It’s in that mind of its own stage. I also have a couple smaller pieces bobbing around. I see some bristlenoses and maybe even a plant in my future. The discus were scared of it at first, but I think they will be fighting over the prime real estate soon. I love seeing something in the tank!

I'm so relieved that it went in. It will be better when the branches decide to come down.

That tank is out of this world beautiful but you're right, it looked sparse and cold. Some plants in pots would be nice. Think about some Sterbai in addition to the BN.

Thanks Liz. It’s funny you mentioned Sterbae because I was thinking the same thing!
I think this wood is going to take forever to bog down since it’s so thick, but at least I’ll get to see it in every position till then. Ha The guy gave me this piece for $65.00 and said it would sell for $90.00 on the website. He felt bad because he didn’t see my email. I called and left a message and when he calle me back, I told him I wanted a large thick piece and he texted me a pic. I ordered another large piece that I could switch out later and 2 small stump pieces that could hide a pot. It’ll be fun watching this evolve.

First let me say my fish are all okay, but what a mess. Monday couldn’t see through the tank. It was a cloudy reddish color but fish didn’t seem bothered. Did an 80% wc. We normally do this anyway and fish looked good once I could see them. Tues noticed a while film covering the wood. I was expecting it as it’s some sugar type sap and same thing happened with my other piece. Did 50% wc. Fish didn’t seem bothered at all.
This morning everything was coated with this thick white film, water was cloudy red color and my beautiful Penang had pimples and eyes looked bad. When I took the piece out, sheets of this white stuff was sloughing off leaving white masses in the water. Did a wc and fish immediately improved. Did another 80 gal water change this evening. So it has quickly evolved back into a bare naked tank again. Ha ha
I’ll have to cure this piece in a 40 gal barrel and change the water daily. A piece this big is going to take forever!

Patty thats a beautiful piece of wood. Its too bad it clouded the water like that. Was this piece of wood green/fresh cut?

Great addition to your big tank Patty .
Leave it in an aging barrel for a month or two , and change boiling hot water there every other day ot two. It's would be enough time for it to sink and neutralize it's tannins there instead in your tank . Fungus can be more stubborn thoug , but it should be harmless to discus as far as my experience with it goes.

It’s manzanita wood, but I do think it’s a fresher cut as my other pieces were a dark brown color. It also is so much thicker than my previous branch pieces. I love this piece, but wanted to warn those who might see mine and say, “I want a piece of that.” For me, another 40 gal wc every couple days isn’t a deal breaker. Ha ha

Filip, you always have the best ideas. Boiling hot water sounds like a great idea to speed up the process. I’m definitely going to try it. Thanks!

That’s the plant I was loving in your tank! I would love to get my hands on one of those! Thanks! I would happily pay you too. It’s going to be a while before I can get it and would probably be better for the plant to wait for the spring thaw up there too. Ha ha. Wow that was so very nice of you! Thanks again!

More than happy to do that! Thanks for making my day Ed. I’m already picturing that tiger lily in my tank. :o
