I'm new to Discus but not to the hobby. I have 2 125g set-ups, 1 Mbunas and the other all male Peacocks. My question is, is it ok to use lava rock from the Mbuna tank to jump-start the cycle in a tank that will eventually house Discus? It is a 55g, with HOB AquaClear and a large internal sponge filter.

Maybe, you run the risk of introducing unwanted bacteria and parasites that the African cichlids can handle that the discus can not, much like the problem that stay at home kids run into the first day of school. A much safer way is the fishless cycle method.

yep, fishless cycle. Or you can cheat and have your discus supplier send you a sponge.

I knew better, but just had to ask. Don't want to wait weeks for the cycle to complete, so I'm scrapping the Discus idea and staying with more Africans.

You probably wouldn't have enjoyed them then anyway mate...it is slow and steady with discus, oh except for the water change routine that is, lol...
