You are on the right track , getting the best of them Tim . And being Piwos , IMO they got a lot of potential of
becoming a show fish some day.

You're fish look beautiful mate, very nice high bodies. Hope they get that thick Piwow look as they mature!
I have never feed mussels but I do recall someone on this site mention they ran into problems due to something in the mussel meat. I cannot remember who or where it was documented but I hope they chime in here with their experience.
Cheers mate! Aussie aussie aussie, oi oi oi!

You never had any problems feeding them to discus before or feeding them to other fish? I hope you're right, it's an expensive lesson if not. There are so many are the proven good foods out there I just wonder if it's worth the risk?? That being said they are yours and you do as you see fit my friend! Keep us posted :)

Here's the thread link I searched for the mussels.
http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?133406-Discus-in-the-Med&highlight=Mussels
Paul is an experienced discus keep in Italy I believe. Have a read, see what you think, again, they're your fish so it's your call if the benefit outweighs the risk. Cheers mate

They look fabulous Tim . I love their colours along with that black Halo development.
What's the current tank and sump size ? What are
your current feeding and WC routines ?
And lastly how old are they supposed to be ATM ?

timvriens
09-23-2019, 05:17 AM
the tank is 63 inch left to right x 20 inch front to back and 21 inch waterline high
the sump is 43 inch left to right x 14 inch front to back and 14 inch high

my feeding routine is artemia in the morning bassleer pellets with the auto feeder at noon mussel when i get home from work and at 10 pm a fish mix
my wc routine is 3 times a week 40%
i have 10 liter of sera siporax and 10 liter of lavarock in my sump for biological filtration

i bought them in april when they were about 2/3 months old so they schould be about 9 months now, i know thats way to young for breeding but i have 2 fish doing the breeding dance :p

Jeeeej wigglers :bounce:

Because the pair was so aggressive in the community tank, I put them in a breeding tank just so the rest of the fish could take a rest
planning to switch to RO water, but then i got sick and was stuck in bed for 4 days, no not corona :p
so they laid eggs , they hatched and i have about 20/25 wigglers now, jeej hahaha
can't wait so see how the pair in going to do in the next couple of days
the only problem is that i don't have brineshrimp eggs :(
i'm going to try to order some and hope the get here in time

If they attach then you should have time with the BBS in my opinion.
If they don't attach the BBS would not have made a difference IMO.
I went through the same thing with my Santarems . They were bullying everyone else so I moved them to their own tank and they commenced to lay eggs .
It may have taken them 4-6 times to get it right [4-6 weeks] but they did figure it out and have gotten better since raising their fry ..
You have the very fish I want ! I was just in communication with Alex ..
What I would give to just go and select fish from him ..
You are living the dream [well my dream !] ..Good luck , be patient and enjoy .
Those are fantastic looking fish you have raised .

So i'm kind of glad they decided to go for it

What do you guys and girls think is the best time to start feeding brine shrimp?
there are about 25/30 fry , or do you think the parents can handle it on there own

coralbandit
04-01-2020, 06:11 AM
I started feeding BBS on day 2 or 3 lightly ramping up a little more each day .
I found pouring the BBS right over the fry and parents that some of the shrimp stuck to the parents slime and helped the fry learn about and find them .
The fry grow so fast you could be feeding much more in a week or so ..
I think mine were even nibbling on the freeze dried black worm cube for the parents around day 10 .
Congrats and enjoy ! No need to be sorry it is exciting every time ! :bounce:

I do not have the heart to cull any of those that I have raised from spawn. I even caught a bat in my house once and rather than smack it with a broom I caught it and let it go outside. Same with mice, the ones that survive the trap, get let go in the field, or the nasty neighbor's yard late at night.

Absolutely stunning fish Tim!

It's interesting you noting that one of the young turns black sometimes. In a group I'm growing out I have one that does that sometimes and he's the joint largest! It seems to be a mood thing because 30 seconds later he can be perfectly light in colour again. He did it a lot around the 2-3" mark, but he still does it occasionally and goes submissive to the others even though he's now 5.5", I've no idea why.
