Our hobby is one where we keep a bunch of fish in glass or plastic boxes. We care for them, feed them, watch them, obsess over them. It sounds pretty straightforward right? Hobby's are by design supposed to be something that you enjoy doing . Something that is a leisure activity that lets you unwind and take your mind off things. But they are much more than that. They are incredible learning tools. I was watching my discus and realized just how much the hobby has taught me over the years.

-pH and chemistry
-tds and conductivity
-nitrogen cycle
-genetics
-electrical applications
-foods and nutrition
-Disease, Parasitology and medications
-botany
-invertebrates
-fish(obviously)
-packing and shipping [ livestock and dry goods)( its a science unto itself!)]
-plumbing
-Human interactions ( still working on mastering that one!)

........etc...etc...etc....

Seriously, our hobby is one really impressive teaching and learning tool!

So Stop a moment and think about what you have learned in the pursuit of this hobby... its pretty amazing.

Some times I wonder why I keep slogging along when the Discuss have unexpectedly given me a kick in the head so many times.

My rule of thumb for a really good hobby is that it's got to be

1. too expensive
2. really messy
3. really frustrating

Can't think of a better one than keeping discus, Willie

Not only learned many things, reconnected with my youth when I had wild Discus 50 years ago. Taking my 8 and 11 year old granddaughters along the banks of the Connecticut river to find the two perfect pieces of drift wood for the new tank. ( We found them)
