Hej Guys and girls,

One of my fish has a defect in his/her gilplate, it has been this way eversince i got the fish
But it Just happens to be the fish with the best color and pattern in my opinion
So my question is, would the offspring be more likely to have this defect or not
I know the picture is not the best but i Just dit a huge clean of the tank 😂😂 hense the stressbars

Hi Tim, does the fish hold the gill cover more open then normal or is the gill cover short. If the fish simply hold the gill more open then normal that can be from an environmental cause vs a defect.

Its more open , so you think its not a genetic thing ?
And breeding should not be a problem *♂️

Yes, does the other gill cover appear normal? I have seen plenty of fish at the NADA shows who hold their gill covers more open then normal.

It looks flaired at the edge of the plate. If so, I was told this is most likely environmental and not genetic. Even short gill plates can be environmental...

I remember Al saying the same thing Brian (Jeep) mentioned in a thread in the breeder section sometime a couple of months ago. I recall in the case where the curved Gill plate was mentioned that it was associated with a nutrient/mineral deficiency of some kind...sorry to be so vague...

Actually, it was in my contest section :o Here's a link post 156-157... http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?133622-Brian-s-2018-grow-out-challenge/page11

I'm not sure what the imbalance would have been, but I don't dispute what Al says :book:
