Hi, My name is JJ
I have become very interested in setting up a discus tank, and am curious as to what an ideal set up for these fish would be. I would like to get them on the smaller side and let them grow together in the tank we get, Lookin at a 120g 48' x 24' x'24, would this be a good size for them to grow together as a group of 6- 8 with tank mates eventually after I get use to these guys. Other questions would be best filtration and heating elements to use for the tank? Any help is appreciated! Thanks

Hi JJ and welcome to Simply. I think a 120 works great for adult fish. If you are thinking of growing them out you might start them off in a 40 breeder and move them to the 120 as 4.5 to 5 inch sub-adults. I suggest that you do some research here on the forum. Lot's of good info here. As you read around you will get a feel for filtration and some of the other questions you might have. I see you found Al's video. That is a great starting point.

Hi, JJ. Glad you're doing your research and asking questions now rather than jumping into a discus tank.

Watch this video first,

Paul had a really good 6 rule guide here

And, you can either skip the above and just go through Brian's and Pat's grow out challenge and see if you're up for the challenge of growing fry.

This isn't to scare you, but discus require a lot of work when they are young. This is if you want those nice big round discus. However, you can do a less extensive growout and have not so round or stunted discus. I can assure you that after a year, you'll want Pat's and Brian's quality size.

What kind of strains and tank setup were you thinking about?

We are really liking the red turquoise, snakeskin color variations, still deciding though honestly. We just picked up an 85 gal today acctually. I plan to get them around 3 in. But want it big enough for when they are fully grown, would it be better to leave the water level lower when they are smaller?
