Hello all,

I have attached a picture of a discus I am breeding successfully, but I have been unable to identify what strain he is. When I purchased him the seller claimed he was either cobalt or turquoise. However, I am skeptical that he is either of these. I am selling his offspring and want to know what is his likely strain so I can give buyers a better idea of what his progeny may look like.

Thanks for the assistance.

Regards,

Blue snake skin. Nice fish! What is the other fish of the pair? Very important to know that as far as the young are concerned. BSS will throw turk types as well as SS types. All the fry from the grow out challenge came from Al's FLSS pair...turks, BSS, RSS. Almost always get a mixed bag from the genetic lines used to create the strain in question.

Ah thanks all for the help! He's been quite successful with breeding with one of our blue tigers. Next question, we bought another fish as a blue snakeskin and now I am questioning if he is also a blue ss. Thoughts on this fish?

This discus is not a SS, it's a turk type, perhaps a tiger turk evidenced by the vertical pattern above the lateral line behind the gill plates...

The BT Turk x BSS will produce a mix of SS & turks in the offspring.

interesting! thanks for the assistance!

any thoughts as to what the blue snakeskin x orange melon might turn out to produce?

Would the snakeskin x melon produce some sort of pigeon snakeskin?

Thanks again!

I thought you mentioned the BSS was breeding successfully with a blue tiger? Crossing a BSS with an orange melon will produce a heavily peppered (undesirable) fry as the melon is pigeon blood and BSS non-PB. It can take many generations to produce clean fry crossing PB to non-PB...usually requiring the genes of an intermediate or albino in the mix to clean up the peppering...

I had 3 PB sold to me in my early discus days before I knew any better. Was told they were high quality fish. 1 out of the 3 survived and they all look just like this one.
I hate to say it, but I am looking forward to the last one going away.
This really is a "live and learn" hobby.

Holynehpets, those are some beauties you've got there.
I am especially fond of the yellow PB.
