Is it ok if one of the daily feedings is extra lean ground beef or some salmon/cod fillet meat?
Any downside?

I'm not sure I recall where I read this on SD, but at least for ground beef I believe that it needs to be cooked prior to feeding to discus. Not entirely sure on the fish fillets.
Even the leanest ground beef has much more fat in it that beef heart. If you can't use BH then there are some good cod recipes out there...

I fed ground deer heart raw, and believe I read here that raw lean beef is a viable high protein feed option also...I wouldn't feed anything less than 95% lean personally though and that would be much more expensive than just buying heart meat...
Yeah, I pay $1.80 for BH and 95% lean beef is about $7, lol...

You can buy ground beef based on its fat content. Excel brand has a version 95%+ lean. My supermarket sells whole beef heart. You'll have to clean and grind it yourself.

I fed my Discus ground beef from the local butcher also ground turkey too, just do a waterchange as Brian mention there is all that oily fat sticking to the sides of the tank not to mention plugging up the sponge filter. As for feeding any fish, I buy those fish cake at any local Asian fish market.

I raised a large spawn from tiny babies to adults once on nothing but 99% fat free ground chicken once. Ask Francis. He bought a large group of the from me once.
