Hi,

I bought a 55g QT last week. I plan on painting the back of the tank black to hide cords. Would painting the side panels black as well help calm the fish, or is the back sufficient?

Painting the tank will hide cords, but that's for the hobbyist - not for the fish. BTW, all my tanks on painted on three sides and the bottom.

Back is sufficient. Especially if you approach the tank from the side often, you want it clear so you can see them

If you notice most discus tank pics that are painted are in light blue or another lighter color, especially for PB's. but a matter of preference.

Mine are painted light blue because it brings out discus colors and works best for photography. Very difficult to photograph a tank painted black without supplemental flash.

Well, it really depends on you. I agree with the comments that say paint it a lighter color.

I paint all my tanks the same. Light blue on the sides and bottom and Stone Creations on the bottom...

Light paint is amazing. I found that it helps them.

I know this is an older thread. I have a 40 gal breeder and 20 gal long. I want to paint the side of the 20 gal long so they don't see the discus in the 40 gal breeder. It seems like most people choose to pain their tank a lighter color. What paint do people use to ensure it's non-toxic? I'll be painting the outside of the tank, but just want to be safe!

I just use latex interior paint with a foam roller. Some use spray paint. It is on the outside so it does not have to be non-toxic.

I used to paint them.. no more for me.

I use 1/4 foam... insulates and is removable in a snap
.

Get it at home depot and lowes... comes in baby blue and a light teal green.

Like Brian I use reflectix for insulation on the back and sides. I use 3/4 inch bead board under the tanks as a cushion and insulation.
