While Epsom salt is good for discus for purgatory use there is a Chinese yellow powder for bloated stomach and swim bladder problem which I had used in the past for discus swimming tail down and nose up due to swim bladder issues. This Chinese yellow powder if used early help immediately. Are Epsom salt and this yellow powder having the same properties.

Do you recall the dosage of the Epsom salt per gallon, Seanyuki? For general tank population not bath. Thanks

Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is a laxitive. It will help constipated, bloated fish pass feces (poop). You use 1 or 2 teaspoons for each 10 gallons of tank water. Disolve the epsom salt in a cup of water and pour into tank. It should work in 2 to 4 hours. You can redose after 4 hours, but if it hasn't worked in 24 hours, it probably won't work at all.

I use 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons. If it doesn't work within 24 hrs I'll go with 2 tablespoons per 10. If that doesn't work the bloat has turned into an internal infection that as far as my experience is impossible to cure.

Usually 1 per 10 gallon works for me. I haven't tried going much more than that.

Can the Epsom salt be used for preventative maintenance in a community tank or should I wait until a fish gets sick?

My motto is - don't fix it if it isn't broken. Therefore, only treat symptoms when and if they arise. There is no need to treat with epsom salt as a "maintenance" treatment.
