Hello all! This may be a dumb question, but what exactly is meant by the word "strain"? Speaking in breeding terms, instead of a mutt, breeding the *same strain*. Does this mean, the whole pigeon varieties or more specifically, for example, the red pigeons by itself?

A strain is a genetic variant with one or more mutations. These mutations are then bred together for that mutation.

The pigeon bloods are a strain that resulted from a mutation that resulted in the absence of bars. The bars showed up as the peppering we now see in PB's when they get stressed. Breeders have worked pretty successfully to remove the peppering. There are many variations or varieties of pigeon bloods, like the red pigeon you mentioned. Most of the variety names are just assigned by the breeder. Wild type (turks), brown (from which we get red covers) and goldens are other strains I've heard of. Maybe there are other mutated strains these days.
