After cleaning out the filter it throws a load of detritus into the tank when it restarts itself, I assume this is all from the tubing. It is quickly sucked back into the filter and the water is clean again but looks horrendous for 5-10mins.

Does anyone have any tips on how to stop this or how to easily remove it from the tubing?

Well what I do is put a fish net over the output. This catches 90% of the stuff. Next you can remove the output hose and run a wire brush through the hose than rinse out with water and reinstall.

Cheers Iminit. I'll try the net idea next time. I did have some old filter socks I can use!

Yup, 200 micron socks work well. I'm testing out this stuff called Seachem Pristine, can't say I've seen great results so far. It's a bacteria blend that is supposed to help lessen detritus.

Removing it pretty easy.. When I had canister filters I used something like this...
