Lets face it, they aren't in our tanks forever. Sometimes they die, sometime we sell them or have to find them a new home but theres a good likelihood that at some point you had a discus or two or three that just really checked off all the boxes. You know the ones I am talking about. You wish you wish you still had them.

Post away.. a tribute to those discus you no longer have.. I suppose we could also include one that you currently have that you would seriously miss if you no longer had it.

One of mine.. a wild green male.. the father of my wild green crosses I work with now.

I just really liked this fish alot.. it was a great parent and one of the most interactive discus I have had.. I had hoped to back cross his kids to him but things dont always go as planned.

Here's my favorite from the old days. He was the model for the Simply Halloween pumpkin...

What does “work with” mean?

Thank you! "Work with" means that I bred this fish with a certain intent in mind. After awhile in the hobby and having bred a bunch of different discus some of us get it in our heads we would like to breed with a more long range outlook than just wanting to raise babies from a pair. Its a bit longer commitment. Not to put words in Liz's mouth but For instance Liz has certain goals in mind for the stock she is breeding... for me, my focus is wild x domestic crosses.. We are hoping that over time and generations we can understand genetics better and make some really nice fish that are what we want .

So that wild green above with fry was crossed with a blue snakeskin domestic and gave me a bunch of fry that are my f1 fry.. those I raised to adult and now will "work with" the ones that have traits I want..

Like this F1 male..

Its not for some lofty goal like creating the next new fancy named strain.. its just another step in our hobby. Its challenging because its a really long term commitment but fun because you never really know what you will end up.

Al, I hope you do not mind a video for some of this. In this video below are the first wild pair which spawned for me. The first discus in the video is the female. She wasn't big and only had a few spots but she is one of my all time favorite discus.

If you want a walk down memory lane check out this thread http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?93579-Wild-Tefe-Spawn. It's features this discus and her first mate. It's long but funny and cute. So many memories.

That fish was the model for the NADA show one year. She has the most perfect shape than any wild I have ever seen. There was something about this fish that appealed to my eye. I remember when Pat lost her. It broke my heart.

She's absolutely beautiful for sure, every thread that Pat comments on gets me to pause a bit and stare at her fish :)

Man... if I can only pick ONE (at least one I have pics of... I had some jaw dropping wilds in the mid 90's that my teenage butt had no business keeping:( )... I'm going with the first Blue-Faced, Blue-Halo'ed RC that Kenny knocked me off my feet with. My God, her and her sister were so velvety looking in way way I haven't seen since, and then both of them, but especially one... just developed into such a phenomenal Chica (colors, demeanor, parent, etc). These pics don't do her justice AT ALL.

I came in third for thick lined turq at the NADA show in Chicago with this guy. I actually had two entries, both very similar in shape and color, but the other one finished out of the money. This one was a full 7.5" long, the other was 7.25".

135697

I was absolutely thrilled to be competitive with all the importers and farms at that show. Never had anything since in my fish room that approached these two in size or quality. So there's a fair amount of luck involved...

That was a really stunning Turq..You should be proud. And you didnt have a farm with hundreds of fish to cherry pick.

You are such a brat Elliot :D I posted earlier in this thread but just for you...

I called her the Red Lady. She was a F1 Cuipeua and her red color was natural. She was a great mom and I miss her. Her only fault was she had amber eyes vs red.

I'm a real sucker for the wild strains. I personally think they are all very beautiful fish. There are a few far from wild strains I can get behind, but very few. Heckles, Tefe Greens are tops to my eye.

Big blue got photobombed. She’s my favorites bc I got her around 3-3.5” and she blossomed onto this with a nice shape and color. She doesn’t have red eyes though which doesn’t bother me much.

This Discus was a pet shop fish, it use to sit side on at the end of the tank and watch me at my desk at the other end of the room. I loved how bright it got, like florescent aqua colour.
This is when I got it & then just before I sold it when I gave up the hobby 4 years ago. I loved this fish
