View Full Version : F2 offspring..My first fry tank in a Long time

Well.. as some of you know I took a break from fish and the forum to care for aging and sick parents. Then the pandemic hit and I had one more reason not to breed fish. I had split all my pairs in male or female tanks and focused on family. Recently I was able to start enjoying my fish, the forum, and my hobby again. I set up my fish into pairs again and started where I left a few years ago. I was focused on wild greens crossed to blue snake skins... i left off at F1 crosses.. Im happy to say I have my first tank of F2s. Now.... Its a real small spawn... 20 fry. I pulled them early when the parents re-spawned while they were on their backs.

I have several pairs that are spawning now and they are all really interesting for me to work with. But for now I am really happy with these fry.. they are from my favorite pair. I wish I had more but if I get a tank of 10 decent ones I will be thrilled.

The pair...

These fry are in a 29 gal bare bottom tank. They currently get my discus chow 2 times a day and live baby brine shrimp 2 times a day. Water changes are 30% daily .. 20 fry in a 29 gal is a light load at this size.. I'll increase wc as they grow.

Hopefully they continue to grow well.. starting with 20 some odd fry is really leaving no room for screw ups. NO PRESSURE.:bandana:

I should add that these spawned in my tap water.. Im not using ro water right now as Im on a well and after last years draught ..Im a little leery of wasting water.

If you have two spare fingers please cross them for me. I will feel better when I have more fry.

Fingers crossed that these turn out well for you! How old are the fry at this point? They look to be around the 30-day mark, which I've understood to be the most difficult period to keep fry. Knock on wood that these continue to grow healthy!

Congratulations, you dog. I'm still waiting and waiting and waiting some more. Don't be a fool like one of your Mods who sold all her fry and was left with none for her self. Got all sort of stuff crossed.

Thanks Jake, They attached April 6th. It can be challenging at this age.. So far its been good. What I like about this age is they start to show their potential and start to shape up.. I can also clearly see which will have snake skin patterns.

Liz, I hope that you get fry soon. I'm tempted to switch to RO water here to bump up the hatch rates, but first the pairs need to do their part. I was a little worried that I might have missed my window to breed these as they are 5 years old but they are starting to get into breeding mode now.. 2 pairs in particular.

How is your SS pair from the contest doing? I loved those fry.

I have the Male still..trying to pair him up with one of his kids. These F2 wild crosses are related to him... The original wild green was crossed to the contest fish pair's sibling..

If I get more fry from that contest fish line I will let you know Brian.

Al, I'm sure that you know what I'm waiting for. Fry from a SS pair (or turk x ss) with a strong blue base. I'd prefer that at least one of the parents has a red eye, but if not I can fix that in the next generation. But whatever you do, take care of yourself first. Like a fool I sold every one of my fry. I thought that it would be easy to make more but I was wrong.

Liz, I got you covered as soon as I have those fry.No worries there!

If it goes like it always does here it will be ...nothing...nothing.. then all at once more fry than I have tanks for.. Truly feast or famine.

So far so good here.. i just moved the 9 smallest to their own 29 gal tank and kept the 8 biggest in a 29 gal.

Doing 30% daily still but split the fish to two tanks.

Food is my discus chow here and my freeze dried blackworm fines.. 2 times a day with each, so 4 feedibgs per day.

I'm really hoping I get another spawn in the next week. After that its going to get very hard for me to raise fry for the next few months. Summers are when we do our family vacations and I am camping alot, I am running out of time to get them to the point where I can leave their care to others.:( Its a bummer really but can't be helped.

The same pair or a different pair? have two pairs spawning ...one is the same pair, the other is a sibling pair, but the male just isn't fertilizing. He knows kind of what to do, but theres nothing there.. The female of that pair I know is fertile.

Going to hate to leave these guys for a weeks vacation, only have 2 weeks to put more size on them and then while I am away they will get 2 feedings a day That I will pre-measure .. no water changes. I will however move them to a 125 next week so they will have a ton of room and good water. For Food... Just Discus Chow since last week.... Its the easiest thing for when I am away and the fry love it as much as blackworms.

Hi all,
I haven't updated this thread in a bit. Thought I would now. My F2 wild crosses are doing well. I have 9 in a 125 gal and they are doing awesome. I had been away on vacation last week for 9 days and while gone I had our Pet sitter feed these fish 1 small scoop of my DIscus Chow Pellets daily in the morning. Usually If I go away I don't feed at all but these are small fry and really need food daily.

To date, These have only been fed live BBS as fry and then maybe a few days of my FDBW fry fines to transition from Baby Brine Shrimp to my .8 mm Discus Chow Pellets. Currently they are eating the 1mm pellets.

Time for a quick update..on these F2 crosses. These 9 fry are doing well. Snakeskins haven't colored up yet but I saw that in the F1 batch too. Of interest here, that I did not see in F1s... I have 1 fish that really is developing a Strong Red Turq kind of pattern. His shape isn't ideal, but I will be interested to see how it turns out.. Possibly one other one as well is Red Turq like.

So I posted these updates a few days ago and in keeping with current forum norms.. got a lot of looks and no discussion.. Looking at the pics I guess I can see why. Though they are growing well they arent very colorful. This is often the case with homebred fish. Imported fish are often either "color fed" ,hormone treated, or sold as much older fish when they have naturally colored . Its one reason why many sellers choose to bring in 4 " plus or bigger fish. What you see as the customer is what you get. Raising fry you bred to adulthood takes patience and commitment. Probably why so few discus keepers actually do it. Its also a leap of faith. Its hard to know exactly how fry will turn out even from same strain breeding. Add in crosses and its next to impossible. On the forum today I think theres just a handful of us doing this.

So back to my fry... what do I hope for ? Honestly anything interesting is fine by me... knowing They are mine is a good feeling. What do I really want? I WANT more like the Dad of these fry. Ultimately I hope to have a female thats similar so I can back cross to the dad. I wish I had more fry to grow out but this is what I have.

This is the Dad..

Its what am trying to get to... and then improve from there.

Just some insight to share.

Been following but have nothing to add. For me it’s a great thread giving me an idea of what to expect. I’m at I think 30days and taking them off bbs. They are devouring the fdbw and pick off the bottom the discus chow. I’m feeding a lot more than you maybe 8x a day. Just enough for them to finish in a few minutes. So what happened to the other 8?

brewmaster15
10-01-2023, 06:27 PM
The other 8 were under performers.. I had one slider and a couple just didnt grow as fast. I Split them out to their own tank and tried to get.them to catch up. Its a hard choice but I would rather focus on the best from a group. When they are small its easy to forget the space they need. Since my intent is to grow them up and keep them to breed it makes the most sense to be very picky . A mistake alot of novice breeders make is they keep way more fry than they can possibly raise and then all the fry suffer . Its a real bummer when that happens.

Some updates .. changed up their diet abit now to add more Freeze Dried Blackworms. Still feeding my discus chow as their main food.

Thanks Liz. I think theres a good amount of influence here from the wild green genes. These are my f2 from a wild green male crossed to a fine line blue snakeskin. If they develop along the same lines as my previous wild green crosses.. theres a good chance for some really nice snakeskins.
I don't know why but the snakeskins take longer to color up in this cross than the non snakeskins.

Hi Al, nice seeing your fish! I was sorry I didn't do better growing out some of your SS fry a few years ago during the challenge...

It seems like even your 9-bar varieties have quite a bit of spotting going on, which is a nice look. I'll bet the snakeskins will be really nice when their color comes in.

(Aside: I always used to try to figure out from online photos how the Stendker "red scribbelt" were different from the "red turquoise" and my best guess was always some degree of spotting in the middle, though I don't know if that was supposed to be the main thing or not.)

I'm curious what you are seeing now that you might be able to attribute to the wild green genetics.

HI Bill,
A few things that I have noticed in the past. Theres a certain activity level to these fish thats different than my domestics. They are more active.. swim around more. They school more.... but not out of stress. Their colors, if am right the snakeskins will have a more wild look. This is all just speculation probably heavily influenced by wishful thinking on my part. But I have raised enough fry now to feel they are different in some ways from domestics,

Thanks Pat... I have a few goals here..

ultimately I want a tank adults that look.like the father is the first goal. I do believe the f2 snakeskins will... and then hopefully I can cross back to the dad.

The second I will need to do another cross for.( that one im saving for another time/discussion..)

and the third one is I am following the turq patterns a bit now. IM REALLY intrigued by the f2 turq patterns.. the f1 turqs were very blue.. the f2s look more like Red Turqs at this point.

Its all seriously interesting to me.

Been a few months since last update... still doing well. I am starting to see some sparring . I'd have to check my notes but these should be just shy of a year old. These are F2 crosses from my wild Green X Blue snakeskin discus

No worries Pat.. The first is actually not a snake skin, but more closely resembles domestic Red turqs. It surprises me as in the F1 , everything was Blue turqs like those fighting Turqs I posted a video of. The second fish here is a snakeskin... its still developing color and hopefully will show more pattern.
