We don't really see too many of these in CT but they are around. Black Crowned Night Herons are a really great bird... almost like a sloth in how slow they move, until they lunge at a fish. I really love these birds and was lucky enough to come across one today as I visited a pond I had seen them at a few years ago. It really made me work for my pictures.. Nothing like wading into a muddy pond to your knees when you had not planned on it .Did I mention the water was cold?

Oh well at it was worth it... Hope you enjoy.

Gorgeous Al and I also love these birds but waiting for them to move is hard. You got it catching a fish :D I can't help thinking that is a once in a lifetime event. Well done and super nice images, it was worth the wet feet :D

Amazing he caught that fish in that water. Very nice pictures, yes maybe once-in-a-lifetime shots.

Thank you Greg!

How far are you from this bird? Do you have any cover?

I am about 30-40 yards away... I initially saw the bird across the pond at about 200 yards... then I hike though the woods and circled the pond. I made note of some old wood duck boxes near the night heron that were my reference point.. I came out of the woods and slowly moved into the pond and off shore about 6 feet to get a clear shot. There was zero cover.. but when I stalk wildlife I always wear woodland colors and have a hoodie or hat.. hoodie was over my head. I would say It probably took me 15 mins just to leave the woods and inch out into the water for the shots.I was a bit apprehensive as I was treading where I did not know the water depth or degree of muck. Hindsight says it probably was a bad risk.. I've done worse though.:)
