Im pretty sure Leo is the face of an axolotls nightmare..

He is Ruthless at fishing them out.. this tank is a sanctuary.. too tall for him to get them. Any other tank has to have bricks on the lid...he just reaches in and pulls them out. .. all my axolotl tanks are downstairs.. he will fish them out and bring them upstairs to play..

We have gotten very good at lid security havent lost one in over a year but he still tries.

This tank has about 20 in it and he is just mesmerized.. I know the gears are turning constantly as he watches it.

Axolotl is probably a pretty good meal for a cat, honestly.

It was a good meal for the people that lived around its native waters in Mexico too.
Though no longer hunted as food (practically extinct in the wild) you can eat them in Japan of all places..

They eat everything in Japan that's breathing. LOL I lived there for 5 years and there isn't much that they don't eat.

Too cool. I wish I'd lived there for 5 years. I'll try anything once. Even Axolotls.

Eating them got us thru the pandemic here. I'm so glad we Started raising them. Between the axolotls as a meat source, eggs from our hens, and the various roots and herbs we grow here we have been very lucky. :) :) :):bandana::

More on axolotyls, http://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/05/science/mexico-axolotl-biology.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Dk0.twRe.0cS7 z841r_dU&smid=url-share. Apparently, they are also eaten in their native habitat of Mexico.
