Saturday I adopted some discus from a friend. In the group there was a pair of pigeon. Spawned today in Qt.:)

Doubtful how many eggs if any will hatch as it im my tap and I know nothing on if this pair will be successful in tap. Still.its kind of cool. I haven't had pigeon bloods in ages here and these are really nice fish.

Lol.. How do they fit it in?. I guess they help me deal with my disease condition. DAS.

Discus Aquisition Syndrome. :)

Seriously though I really hadnt planned on breeding any of these adoptees initially but was just going to enjoy them in a display tank. HOWEVER, I am weak in my convictions when it comes to discus. My breeding program as a result just expanded..lol.

Does that surprise anyone here? :)

It makes it worse…. You going to start a new line of Pigeons before you realize it. Just need to wait a bit for the bug to bite you when they fry goes free swimming.

Honestly, I'd have been more surprised if you witnessed a pair spawn so quickly after being transported and NOT add them to the breeding program lol. :D

“DAS” right mate! :D
Very nice acquisition. They are nice looking clean pigeons, no peppering! Lovely discus. Would you call the one with the large white spots a red panda or red eagle? Or do you steer away from trade names and stick with pigeon blood as their descriptor?

I do really hate trade names, but I believe the red one here is a "red eagle" as it came from Ping/Forrest.

Actually those pigeons are nice and clean with hardly any peppering at all, congrats on receiving them AL.

Thanks guys..
I hadnt expected much from the eggs but these two have been intently tending them. Looks like maybe 20 fertile with eye spots. Its a real good sign given the circumstances and my tap water.

I wish my tap water was like that. LOL I have to use RO water for mine because my tap water TDS is 597 and my PH is 8.7

Under normal circumstances I get hatch rates of about 30-40% in my tap.. being on a well and having had well issues and having as many tanks as I do.. RO would be a real risk so I only use it if I really really want a spawn from a particular pair. Usually 30-40 % hatchrates are still a good number of fry ..more than enough for my purposes.

This pigeon pair has really grown on me.

They laid eggs again last night but since they are still in Qt I really don't want them raising fry. So I pulled the cone and have it in a RO water to see how many hatch out. If its only a few I will not bother but if its a good spawn I will either try fostering them or go artificial.

What do you expect in terms of color and pattern since you have a white PB with scribbles & a red PB with blotches? My wife loves domestic red discus, so maybe down the road here…… :D

Honestly I have no clue.yet. I have not bred as many pigeons as non-pbs so Im not sure what would happen. Will I get a blending of the two traits or some that look like one or the other? Thats one reason why I like breeding discus and no hangups about crossing strains and color forms. Its the only way to learn the answers first hand.
