Sounds a bit Dr.Seuss-ish but it fits. This thread is for my adventures with Ram Crosses. First up is a tank with a Gold Male and Female wild .. Also up.is a Black Male x Female Wild. I started by putting all 4 together and once the dust settled the dominant Gold and dominant female wild got the 20 gal.. the black ram and other wild got a 10 gal tank for now. The black ram didnt fair well in the sparing... the gold was a brute but honestly the female wild was worse than the males when it came to the other female she was relentless.

So far both couples seem fine ..but the gold X wild by far is closer to spawning.

My experience was golds were the always beast if equal size.
Just the toughest disposition of all the colors. Funny since color is the only recognized difference?
I know you said they are next, but the best crosses come from EBR IMO.
The EBR X Black is still a wide open field of glory.
Pretty sure the reds I was working on were from Gold X GBR originally.
The female GBR I used was very red to begin with but it got better just never locked in.

Thanks for the comments Tom. I found a seller of a EBR x GBR that I bought a small group of juveniles of. Those should be here next week. I am looking for a good source of EBR but figured until I find them this cross should be interesting.

sellers pic of the adults.

By the way Tom.. I have been looking for some black rams unrelated to yours for diversity. I have contacted alot of breeders of Black Rams... you'd be surprised how many I contacted that were traceable back to your lines. :)

I sold a lot of rams~! :p
Touch base with DiscusMadness in NJ.
They used to get them from Danziger direct with their discus.
He also had someone who was very good breeding in the area that was working the rams.

My EBR came from a gentleman named Greg from Kansas and I can't remember anymore but could probably find him.
Deal was he didn't ship so it was really his buddy { Ryan A} that got them to me.
Haven't heard from Ryan in years.

Thread brought back memories! Back in 2020 Tom sent me a pair of each type of ram he had. 8 in total. The EBRs went into a different tank but the other 3 pairs went into a 125 my discus were in. They did start in a qt tank. But things happened. He’d sent me 4 pairs and within 48hrs all four had laid eggs in a 5g tank. He has some crazy water!! The 6 in my 125 were the best looking rams I’ve ever had. They got along great. Never a problem and every day when the light was at its brightest these guys would put on a show.
http://youtu.be/5kXOM4nsrDs?si=xPEINw2L0UrdUMoV. Guess those weren’t true blacks but they were some magnificent rams! Thanks again Tom!

Thanks Tom.
Those are great memories and man those fish do look good~!

Al I found a good breeder that has my EBR if you are still looking.
Klause/FourC on AquaBid has my stock for EBR and has used my stock for his GBR.
I know for fact he had no EBR before mine and know from having them that crossing them back to any other EBR is a risk/mistake. They were great looking very stable fish.
He is a tough old guy but you can see in his pictures that the EBR are spectacular.

That's funny Liz cause he threw a fit when I gave him a price once~!
I mean he flipped and I was hooking him up~!
He touched base again maybe a year later like nothing happened.

Sheesh, sounds like the type of seller to just steer clear of...any issues and he's gone...

Al, looking forward to tracking your progress with this rams project! I had never seen wild rams until you posted these pics. Its amazing what can be accomplished with selective breeding programs. Tom (CB) accomplished some incredible feats! Many have benefited and are still enjoying the fruits of his labor of love

Its really funny watching baby Rams. They are so different from Discus. Raising a spawn of discus and the babies rarely fight. They just want to eat. Rams nope.. I'm sitting here watching a group of rams that are 3/4 " long and spend their time eating of course... but then spend it chasing each other in facing off and sparring as if they were grown adults.. Feisty little guys.

So 2 weeks ago I posted this

As I post this they are spawning.. of course in the most hidden spot in the tank. I hope they take it to fry. :)

Gold male ram x wild Ram female. Should be interesting.

I've got one pair of rams in a jungle of a tank and when pulled their eggs last time I think they decided they shouldn't spawn on the terracotta dish anymore. I'm sure they've spawned since, but I don't know where they'd doing it. :D Tricky little things.

Yep.. this pair has a 20 long to themselves and theres a terra cotta dish in each corner.. so of course they spawn on an oak leaf in the middle of the tank behind a sponge filter. :)

In anycase though the good news is the eggs all look great today.

This is there first spawn and its in tap water. Be interesting to see what happens .

Maybe laying on an oak leaf is some of those wild genes expressing themselves. :D

I just moved a pretty big spawn of wigglers back with my pair. Hopefully they don't eat them 24 hours after they go free swimming like they have been.
Will be interesting to see what these crossings of yours produce!
