Water Changers, Aging Water, and Archived Info

Aging water in a holding tank or rubber garbage can for 24 hours with aeration, and temp the same as the aquarium is done to stabilize the PH, thus providing stable water for use during water changes. Pumps can be used to facilitate the process. Some can use a constant drip system to the aquarium if the chlorine is removed through the use of an inline activated carbon filter and if the PH is stable. (This can be done even if chloramines are in the water if the biological filter of the aquarium is able to process the ammonia from the chloramines) Ammonia can also be processed in the holding tank using a cycled filter.
The holding tank must be cleaned weekly to prevent the buildup of bacteria.

Ardan,

As much information as there is in these threads I still don't see what I am looking for. I would like to know about plumbing an automatic water changer (read the stuff on drip, which is good but not what I'm looking for). How many holes to drill in the tanks and where - someone show me the way! I saw a reference to the aquatic system manual which may be where I need to look but I thought someone must have a good system in place already that they could describe.

Hi TC,
IF you want , start a new thread in the general topics section (they get more reads), ask your question and get input. (just a suggestion, as I don't have any drilled tanks for an automatic water changer)

Drilling tanks isnot a necessity, the overflow siphon boxes work fine, although pricey, and to me are the best answer for a setup that is going to be up for less then a couple of years, they do take some tank space but in a 29 on up shouldnt be too big of a problem, they overflow only to the amount of what is addded.

Worth looking at, I have used them and like them, for a large permenent fissh room I would prefer drilled tanks, but for small or temporary setups they are a big help.

Once my tank is cycled and I have my fish I will be using a holding tank to age my water before doing water changes. Instead of an air stone in the holding tank, can I use a submersible pump to circulate the water? Thanks.

Hi,
you can sure use a submersible pump, the more it agitates the water the better. ;) :)
