Have any turned black yet? IF not, your male may still be learning the ropes. I have a pair that will lovingly fan their eggs for days, now if the male would just fertilize them >:(
Carol :heart1:

11-12-2002, 10:01 AM
No, I haven't seen them turn black, but this will be there third time to lay eggs, the first time was in my community tank and they lasted 3 weeks and I actuallly had 20 free swimmers then they were eaten by the other fish, but I could not see the eggs after 3 days because they moved them behind a piece of wood. After that, I moved them to their own tank and bought the cone from Rosenthal Pottery. The second time, lasted 4 days and then they were gone from someone unplugging my tank, and then about 3 days later they layed eggs again, which are these pictures. So...... I am hoping....

Thansk DHDiscusMan... ;D
I really do not know how many I have now, they are hard to count!!!! heehee... I had 388 eggs, cuz I counted them from a picture, but I would doubt that all made it, so my guess would be I still have half??? I guess I will know when they start getting bigger. Good question, though..... what is the normal number of fry???? Anyone know?

I hope you get there someday too, cuz it has truly been an exciting experience and I hope I continue to experience there growth!!!!! I have my fingers crossed!

11-20-2002, 10:57 PM

11-22-2002, 12:16 AM
I have no clue how many fry are there! I try to count, but there are too many and they are too quick!!!! I know from pictures - over 150, but no way can I get all the fry in a picture, they seem to hang on both parents. I am just so overwhelmed, surprised and excited to experience this my first time around, words cannot express how thrilled I am! It is honestly the best thing thats happened to me!!!! :sun:

Daddy is the big blue guy, who is a Red German, and Mama is a blonde pigeon blood. They are both young, bought them at 2" and they grew like weeds. Have had them for one year. First spawned in my community tank (a month ago) and I got to free swimming (they never found the parents and everybody else ate them!!! so, I moved them to a breeding tank, layed eggs the second time and one of my kids pulled the 6-way out of the wall - next day they were GONE!!! Layed eggs again 3 days later and here I am!!!! ;D

I really have done nothing, (water changes 2X's a day and feed them twice a day) other than that my fish deserve the credit - they have been really good parents so far and I hope they keep up the good work!!!! Cuz I want BABIES really bad!!!!! Thanks so much though.....

Wheezy, i would just watch the parents. When you can see the fry are bothering them,( and it will be obvious), then its time to pull them. I would give it as long as they parents can tolerate it. There is no beating a 24/7 food supply perefected by mother nature IMO, so go as long as possible with the parents and just keep feeding BBS to help MOM.
Good job, Matt

Hi Paul. I found it impossible to move the fry! Tried the vacumm method - not enough power to suck one in the hose, then I tried the net - and accidentally killed one :'( so, I ended up just moving the parents and left the fry in their original tank. It was much easier this way!!!! Here is day 21................ and oh my - I cannot even begin to take a full picture of babies, there are sooooooooooooo many, not to mention swimming everywhere!!!! Truely amazes me.... I am goin over there tonight. Can't wait to see there size as it has been a week since I last saw them.

I hope I have the luck she is with my new spawn. So far they spawned on the other side of the cone. Outa site!... Geeze...... :-\

Julz

12-06-2002, 01:27 AM
Hi Brad! I have tried to count, and like Julz said it is impossible- they are EVERYWHERE!!! They fill the entire 28g I have them in and they are still SMALL! I know I have over 150+ babies..... and tonight my breeding pair spawned again in their new tank!!!!! Very bad, very very bad..... Is this suppose to happen? Does anyone know? Do I remove the eggs to let mom and dad heal from the last batch or is this normal for them to breed again? Mom has healed quite nicely from the last picture I showed of her side. I wouldn't think I could get lucky again, but I don't know.... I am a beginner and have never owned fish that had babies before. All I do know, is that it's been almost a week with my fry away from mom and dad and they are growing quite rapidly-

hee hee . cute.
ok...im no expert..but i think maybe....you should start splitting them into two tanks according to size so the smaller ones dont have to compete against the bigger ones. then....maybe you can count as you move fish!!!
any breeders out there who know when they should be split up according to size?

12-11-2002, 12:30 AM

fcdiscus
12-11-2002, 01:29 AM
Hey weezy- they are at a delicate stage where flukes cause damage and bacteria infects the gills. 1 tbs salt per 2 gallons and a couple of hyde treatments may do the trick to help ward off those deaths! Frank

12-11-2002, 09:54 PM
Thanks Frank-

yes April, it is the small ones that I am losing- 4 more tonight

amazing_discus
12-11-2002, 10:35 PM
Weezy,

Sorry for the lost! I lost about 30 out of 90 frys from my cobalt x turquoise. They are about a dime size and have not lost any for a week now. I used hyde and salt and 30% to 40% water change (straight tap water with w/ amolock conditioner) everyday...good luck......amazing_discus

12-11-2002, 11:31 PM
WOW Amazing Discus.... your tank looks just like mine!!!! haha.... so how are old are yours? Are they older than mine? Did you cut inhalf the hyde or use it at full strength? Thanks.... I appreciate the info ;D

amazing_discus
12-12-2002, 02:27 PM
Weezy,

I did one treatment of 10 drops of formaldehyde and 2 tbs of aquarium salt in their 15 gal..then 30% to 40% WC daily with 2 tbs of aquarium salt for five days. My frys are 3 days older than yours, some are over dime sizes now..The pair had spawned again and have a good size of wigglers already, will be free swimming today. I was surprised when they spawned again also thought that the eggs would not hatched cause their water are 50-25-25 (tap/rainwater/ro)...I will post some pics when I can...Good luck to yours.......Lauro amazing_discus

12-19-2002, 01:47 AM
I ended up not using anything, and let nature take its course. I have not lost any since Sunday. Growing like weeds and losing that ugly black spotted look. Most are clearer now. I would say as of today- I have about 130 babies. Have seen no stress bars yet- so genetics is looking like all pigeons!!! Is this possible? Also, I bought a 75 gallon for them, will this be big enough for them as they grow? I also stopped the last spawn, but my breeding pair spawned again yesterday with the same amount as my day 1 "I have eggs pic", just a few days after I moved them back to their original tank. I will do nothing to promote "more babies".... if it happens it happens and it it doesn't, I am out no more money!!!! haha.... How are your babies PaulMat and how's that second spawn doing?

Weezy ;D

12-19-2002, 02:04 AM

Your orchids are beautiful!

I grew out my whole first batch to see how they changed over time. I know now that the small ones stay small. If you move them to their own tank some will catch up, but most won't. I should have just culled the small ones and concentrated on the big ones. This time I will save the ones with the highest, roundest bodies. The long ones turn into footballs.

I guess it depends on how much room you have for grow outs, your market for juvenile discus and how often you want them to have new spawns.

The earlier you can make a decision the better. I imagine it's pretty hard to put a healthy 2 inch fish in the freezer because it should be rounder and closer to 4 inches now.

Hey PaulMat!!! After you have edited your photo, go to file, export and rename your file in the output window, select the jpeg format. Hit next. In the choose output size window, select the width and height of the photo you wish to downsize to. Select 72 resolution. Hit next. Choose 24 bit color and select quality towards high. Hit finished.

Go to where you saved the file (mine are on my desktop in a folder called Simply) and open the folder. Go to view, details. Scroll down and look at the size of the photo you changed it to. Anything under 75k is exceptable. You will need to play around with your size dimensions and your quality bar, (in your export options) to achieve the best picture quality within the size requirements for posting on the web.

After you have found a happy medium, all your pictures will probably have the same changes in size and resolution, so when you want to post new ones, just downsize to the same dimensions and use the same resolution.

I do not have Zoombrowser, but continue to ask me questions and I will do the best I can to accomodate your needs! If you want an easier way to achieve this with a program I do know very well, PM me and I'll point you in the right direction!
