Hi all my wife and I just took this pair out of the 75 gal community tank 2 days ago. Well this is our first attempt at the real thing. We did let them spawn 4 times in the 75 and the last attempt was really close but the other fish came in and ate the eggs. The pair did try to defend but there were just to many to ward off lol. So will post more info as it goes, ALL SYSTEMS ARE GO HOUSTON, STANDING BY !!! :)

Nice fish, Jim! I'm looking forward to a blow by blow of the mating/fertilization process and the development of the eggs and the growth of the fry!

I would advise u to leave them alone..further disturbance might make them change their mind and eat the eggs. :D

Thanks Bruce, Well UPDATE: I decided to feed them a few black worms and when I did I checked the eggs. There are maybe 75 eggs left and they all seem to be a yellow to amber color. Last night we saw them eatting a few more they must have been infertal ones. Is that correct? If my reading and memory in right they should develope a black dot in the egg, which would be an eye right lol ? At approx. 24 hrs? Is that right. If the eggs were going to turn white (meaning not fertial )how long would that take? Thanks all

UPDATE: All is well at the Beaver household the pair are taking turns fanning the eggs. It's kinda like the changing of the guards at Buckinham palace. :) It's been about 17 hrs since they spawned and counting!!!!! ;D

Jim,

I think it would be very amusing if you named the pair Ward and June...

When I have a male that does not fertilize the eggs, for me the eggs usually fungus over night. Maybe taking about 12 hours. That is my pair, I'm not sure how other pairs would be like. Are you using an R/O unit on your pair Jim? I don't see eyeballs on the eggs the first 24 hours. I usually see it maybe in 2 1/4 days. Then they hatch somewheres on the third day. The pairs can slo play tricks with you. The pair below had the eggs for 2 days or so, and they they had them for lunch. That spawn looked fertile too.

I don't think this is good correct me if I'm wrong. The eggs have a fuzzie growth on them, thats bad right lol ? :'(

fcdiscus

Hey Jim, Why do you have an aqua clear on the breeding tank. With proper WC the sponge will be all you need. Current from the AC will hurt the chances of proper fertilization. Frank

Carol_Roberts
11-15-2002, 03:33 AM
Sorry, I don't see any eyes :-\

I'd go with just a sponge filter in the tank. Next week they will lay again, maybe less current will help.

Jim,

How old are these guys? Do you see the male making passes over the eggs? I ask because my young pair spawns but no success. The male is clueless and doesn't do his part.....( I am being really good and refraining from all kinds of jokes here :P)
Both care for the eggs, and then after about the same time frame that you experienced, my eggs look white too.
I don't know when they'll get it right...so far a spawn once a week since end of Sept.
Good luck.....keeping my fingers crossed for you!!
Maybe someday we can take that short road trip on I-79 and swap fry! ;D

Hunter,
Great start, your fish have been able to stay away from eating the eggs and that is very very good. I have two females laying but eating the eggs within a day or even sooner. I hope they learn to care for them in the near future and not eat the eggs. You already have half the battle won, good luck in the near future.

Jim, I was going to say the same thing Oscar just said. You have a good pair- they did not eat the eggs. Stick with them and youwill be home. :D Frank
