It may be a silly question to some ...

Don't have storage space for a barrle of water

Anybody tried pumping water from basement to the 1st floor?

Thanks.

Sure it can be done. You just need a more powerful pond pump with plenty of head to pump the water upstairs. Maybe someone can recommend one or do a search on pumps. I've seen it discussed here before.

When buying a pump most important is how HIGH it will pump. Add height of basement ceiling + height of tank + a little extra.

You want a pump that will pump x gallons per minute 15 or 20 feet high. Some pumps have a flow restrictor so you can regulate stream. Get one too small and water changes take for ever. Too big and the fish are scared.

My advise...
Check out Menards, or Home Depot. I lean towards the pumps that do not require any type of oil with each use... I think Carol hit it on the size tho. The one I just purchased is great for my 55 but is too stong for my 20 QT.... I didn't think of the AQ size when I purchased it.... Back to the drawing board on that.....

I have the same situation here. Storage tank in the basement and all fish tanks on the first floor. I'm using Mag2400. It refills 5 tanks at the same time with no problem, and I'm sure it would handle many more.

Albert,

How high does the water travel in your case? I think I have about 20-25 ft from basement to my tank (only one 90G). Does Mag2400 have variable flow?

Thanks for the input.

I've got the Mag Drive 1200 and it'll shoot a stream of water over my two story house. Best pumps in my opinion. I left a Mag Drive 500 running dry the other day for 6 hours and its just fine. Clamp a hose over the output, plop it into whatever you want pumped and plug it in. Just unplug it when you pull it out..lol....
