k, i've been looking into the issue of pumping water from my basement up to my main floor to my 190 gal tank.

best two best for the money are.

from grainger.com its a utility pump made by teel and has a garden hose end for input and output. pumps around 360 gph at 1 foot and around 250 i think at 14 ft. has a shutoff height of 28.5 ft. and is $70

or from home depot, next to the sump pumps you can find a 1/4 hp utility pump which is fairly large but has a lifetime warrenty, and pumps aroun 3600 gph at 1-3 ft and around 250 or so at 15ft. head height. this pump also runs $70

so depending on your needs, i'm opting for the home depot so my tanks in the basement are done quickly, but the grainger pump could pump water up to my upstairs bedroom if i ever wanted to put one there!

so i thought i would share the info.

I like my submersible sump pump from Sears. They have several models to choose from and run them on sale throughout the year.

I am not pumping from one floor to the next, but from a garage to a fish room 30 feet away, and the tanks I want to fill daily are 125 and 150gal.
I started with a Eheim 1060 pump (500gph). Then went to a Rio 2100(?)(about 960gph).
Then I went with the largest ViaAqua available (something like 1250gph). Now I don't know how I ever had the patience to wait until the Eheim at 500gph took forever to deliver 60gal to my 150gal tank.
The ViaAqua is the most powerful, least expensive, and least energy-consuming pump I know. Only $56 at Drs.FosterSmith.
I also have a Becket sump pump (1200gph) from HomeDepot that I use for pumping water out of my waste basket. It does alright but doesn't compare to the the beauty of the ViaAqua. It also has several exposed metal parts (couplings, gill, etc).
If you want to pump water a full flight up from your storage, and your tank is large, you will find the pumps you mentioned to be insufficient. Go with a more powerful, cheaper and more efficient one.

I have the one from Grainger. The pump works well except for two things.

1. It does take a while 15-20 seconds to build a prime.

2. You have to use a special suction hose.

I bought mine from www.HoseXpress.com 20' with ends about $30.00

I tried numerous hoses including the heavy duty contractor hoses, but they are too weak for the suction power of the pumps.

I can drain my 125 gallon tank by 90% in about 4-5 minutes though. ;D

how long does it take to fill? about the same? i have a 190 i'm doing, i'd like to fill it in 15 minutes, i like the one from home depot but it's awefully big.

I have a submersible sump pump from Home Depot for filling. It takes 10-15 to fill. One thing to keep in mind for filling is a 3/4 hose is much faster than the 1/2 hose.

as jeff stated the grainer pump has garden hose ends it's not a submersible, so you have to have a pickup hose. but we have one at work and regular hose works fine on it,. is yours the same model jeff?

I need to correct my post.
The Home Depot sump pump I have is a Flotec (not a Becket) and it is exactly the model and specifications given for it by Limige. It does have several exposed metal parts, however. It comes with a garden hose adaptor, and I have attached a black washer machine 3/4 hose. I only use this pump for waste water.
I have not found any better compromise between power, price, simplicity and efficiency than that offered by the ViaAqua 4900 (1321gph), @ $59.99. The comparable MagDrive (Model MD18, 1200gph) costs $40 more. These are mailorder prices.

chi, i think you better ask the alaskan oil guys about that one, i understand they've done some pretty wonderous things, lol

well i was hoping to narrow things down but many people love the mag drive or viaqua's others love their home depot jobs, what i love about the teel pump is it a brute workhorse, a shutoff of 48ft. what other pump can do that!!!
