;D Howdy

I'm new to Discus and about to take the plunge. I work in a LFS but we don't stock Discus. I am a Reef specialist who has become tired of reef tanks. I am converting my 110g to a planted/discus tank. After a heavy duty tank cleaning I sarted the new tank yesterday.

3" of 75/25 mix of flourite and blasting gravel for substrate.
Two Ehiem 2227 canister filters.
RO DI water with Kent R/O Right
12 giant Danio as Cycle fish

I have not tested the water yet as it has only been about 15 hours since set up.

I am trying a new Marineland product called Bio-Spira. We have used it in the store and it seems to meet it's claim of Instant Cycle. We used it in a African tank and never had detectable levels of Amonia or Nitrites. It contains live Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira and Nitrospira. I will post my daily water tests using this product if anybody is interested.

If this forum is anything like the reef forums that I hung out at I'm looking forward to a good exchange of idea's, information and help.

Thanks,

Joe 8)

Joe,

Welcome to Simply! :)

You should check out this section for helpful advice on setting up a planted Discus show tank:

http://forum.simplydiscus.com//index.php?board=7

Don Lee is also a great resource I have read many of his plant postings BUT I have not turned to the Dark Side.

While a planted tank is beautiful it does take work. My Angel tank is planted sort of - Anubias & Onion plants only. My Discus tanks are all bare bottom by choice. I had some potted plants but I removed them so I could fit more Discus in the tank ;D

Sorry Don.

I was looking for a place on the web that I could get answers from people that have kept Discus for a long time and stumbled across Simply kinda by accident . There is a WEALTH of knowledge here .

Good luck with the Fish whern you get them . BTW I use Bacter-plus byaquatronics to cycle my tanks and have had very good results .

Best of luck ,

David

Joe and David,

Welcome to the board!

Discus are great and you will find that they are not as difficult to raise as you might think. Just read a lot and ask questions and you will be in good shape!

John

PS. David, sorry to hear about your dog.
