I have a pair in a 30 gal bb that i am trying to breed. when i change the water, their slime coat seems to peel of in gobs. otherwise, they are healthy and have laid eggs of couple of times with no fertilization. I am using tap water, treated with aqua plus chlorine remover. 50% water change.

Are you aging your water? Could the ph be changing rapidly if your're not? C02 in the water could force large swings in ph...

Do you have chlorimines and does aqua plus remove them? I use Amquel and Prime.

I agree with Jeep. Test the pH in your tank prior to a water change. Then test water directly from your tap. Mine is 7.8 in tank and 6.8 from tap. If I did a 50% water change it would drop the pH from 7.8 to 7.3 in minutes. I can agitate my water with a pond pump for three hours and raise the pH to 7.8. Others with softer water can just use an airstone over night to raise pH.

You ae having a big PH change. Age your water before changing and you should be happy with the results.
