View Full Version : Frozen Foods

Most of us feed various frozen foods to our discus. Bloodworms, Beefheart, ONF1, ect.... What kind of longevity do these products have? How long do they hold there nutritional value. Is it higher in pre manufactured foods vs. self prepared feeds like beefheart. I hate making beefheart it has to be one of my least favorite chores. I'd much rather make a mess every 4-6 months then every 4-6 weeks bloodworms seem to last forever... but before I throw out a bunch a freezer burnt beefheart I thought a few of you may have some insight or suggestions.

Hi ya Mike, you should get ahold of Frank ( I think) at Fish King Frozen food in Chicago...I will send ya his phone number,as soon as I find it in my messy desk. Most of us discus guys around here buy his beefheart and frozen bloodworms and he has lots of other frozen fish foods.
We usually get over 100 lbs so we don't have to pay shipping,I want to say that Discus Diet ( Mostly beefheart) is around $5.25 for a lb. All my fish gobble it up.I have had a lb of it frozen for about 8 months,I( had it in the back of the freezer and it was hidden...no freezer burn.

You could make a whole mess of beef hearts and store them in a vacuum sealed bag.
Here's one:

Mike,
Good question you asked. I keep my b/h for no longer than 6 weeks. My reason is that it looses its nut. value. I just prefer to feed bloodworms and blackworms with flake food myself.

Same thing Denny. Miles I agree for Adults, but Ilike to give the young fish a decent variety. Frank
