View Full Version : How can I maintain high temps?

I have three different brands of heaters and none will raise my water temp above 92 F. The heaters are all relatively new. 1 - VISI-THERM, 1- EBO-JAGER, 1- Marineland. Is there a particular brand that is good for higher temps?

Why do you feel you need to raise it over 92?

I've seen many posts recommending temps above 92F for treatment of Hex and some other diseases.

Steve at Mac's Discus recommends temps at 94F for Hex. I am also using 3 heaters for treatment and can average 93F to 94.5 if I'm lucky and the wind is right and the sun is in the right alignment.... ;) I have not found heaters that can reach 92+ Sorry.

Seems like you'd have to get a heater that didn't have a temp-dial, but rather a power dial (like the old Ebos). Then you could just go w/ like 10 watts a gallon and crank them up. That might not even work, so who knows.

Via Aqua will get the temp up and hold it.

Hi Larry,
The use of heat to cure Hex is one of those debated topics. Some use it and report great success. Others use it and say it works sometimes. some don't subscribe to it all.

It has rarely been studied in live fish...only petri dishes.

my personal feelings are the treatment of hexamita by any means has a long way to go before there is a definitive work all the time cure.

ps... I never keep my discus above 92F... not saying they can't survive it. But from a biological point of view I see more stress than value in it.

I agree don't boil Discus. They don't taste that good apparantly. I prefer salmon.

I preformed a test by putting Discus in two separate hospital tanks with Metro. The first tank has two small discus with 250ml in 10 gallons with 50% W/C every other day for four days at 92F with a little salt. The Discus are recovering but they are not healed yet.

The second tank has four larger Discus and is treated at 94F with 500ml Metro in 40 gal with one W/C and another 250ml dose with heaver salt (4 Tablespoons). It has been 3 days (I am on my last day of heat treatment) - (only 3-4 days recommended for heat treatments, more than that can be bad for them) and it seems to have worked very well. I will know tonight for sure and will post a follow up.

If I have any more problems I will try only heat with no Metro and see what happens.

Hi KC,
How do you know that what you are dealing with is the protozoan Hexamita?
