My male blue SS has a fuzzy looking whitish spot on his side. He doesn't try to rub or scratch it nor is he acting ill in any way. Two other discus in the tank show no signs of any illness.

What could this be and how should I treat it?
THANKS!

Sounds like a bac. infection or something of the like to me. I'd turn up your temp and add salt at 2 tbs. per 10 gallons until someone gives you a more certain treatment. By the way, I'll call you to bring you those fish as soon as i finish my college applications - my parents won't let me until then. I am attempting to finish them today!

If you add some Maroxy along with what brad advised, it should clear up in a few days. Frank

Frank,
Thanks for the advise, I'll add the Maroxy to Brad's remedy.

Brad,
Thanks for the tip and just give me a call when you're free. I don't blame your parents, college apps should come first.

Larry,
What size is your tank? What temp have you been keeping it at? And how much and how often are you doing water changes?
Just a few things I like to know before telling you how to treat it.

The discus was in a 55g tank, but moved it to a 29g tank a couple of days ago for treatment. Temp in 55 is 82, in 29 is 92. I've added salt to 29 at 2 tbs/10g. Water changes of 40% every other day.

Larry, I have some little fishies that want to swim your way tomorrow.....

Larry,
You need to raise the temp. in the 55 to 86. You also need to do more water changes more often. DAILY
To be honest I bet your water is dirty and that is what caused your problem. You will find with 50-75% DAILY W/C's you will LOTS LESS problems.

Miles,

Thanks for the reply. I know I should perform wc's daily but often life's other demands prevent me from being as diligent as I know I should. Why do you suggest increasing the temp in my 55 to 86? Do you mean increase it to 86 and keep it there permanently? My pair seem to like the temp at 82. They spawn every 6 days. I'm not sure they would be as happy at 86. What do you think?

Hi Larry,
Salt at 2 tablespoons/10 gal is not going to have much effect if any at all on that patch. If its fungal, salt at 1 tablespoon/1 gal will clear it up in few days. If it grows at that concentration salt, then its bacterial, and I would recommend trying an antibiotic...something like Furan 2 for starters.

Al,

Thanks for the tip!

Thanks Al, I didn't know that. I thought salt was only for stress and wouldn't cure anything. I had no idea it could stop a fungus as well. hmmmm....lol

Hi Brad,
salt is a great cure for many things. At the conc of 1-2 tablespoons /10 gal it will help with stress by promote ion exchange at the gill surface.

Very interesting Al!

Just one question, do you have any idea how much salt would be added to a set amount of water to get .1-.3%, 1%, and 3%? I may use that as a first attempt at treatments for bac and such from now on if i'm not sure what's going on.
