They are about 2 months old. The largest is about 5cm(head to tail) and the smallest is 3cm. Are they a little behind?

They eat a lot with a full belly. They occassionally have more than 10 black bars on them. People say the black bars will disappear when they are adult. At the size of three inches they turn to orange and at the size of four they turn red.

Hey Wo

Where did you get them from? Did you raise these from a pair you own?

Looks like some real feisty eaters.

Good luck with them ;)

Hi Beth, Jeff and April:

No, none of my discus ever success in breeding yet. The San Merah are bought last week. They came with transparent color and no bar. At first they ate a little with lots of bs leftovers. After a formalin bath, they eat like pigs.
I am trying to get the pictures of the parents.

Here is some picture of the amature breeder:

I have noticed on my red covers they loose the bars on the body between 4-5 months old and later they loose the bar on the eye.

Mike kept me pretty up to date with that batch of Sans as they grew because I had an interest in them. I cannot get over how nice the shape is on some of them. The color is beautiful too, but they are such nicely proportioned fish.

Mike, can you tell me again what you use to paint the bottoms of your tanks? I like that textured look. I remember you told us before but I've forgotten.

Ryan

I used a brown and white splater paint... The same stuff they used to use on the trunks of older cars. Rick found some sand colored paint that also worked great. I agree Ryan the shape is what makes those sans look so nice... It does with any fish ;)

I just wish these guys would start breeding >:(

Hi

Michael, the san Marah are really outstanding. I guess they are super san merah. What do you feed them? They look so pretty at the age of 12 weeks. They say the san merah do not have milk for the fries so it's better to have a pair of nanny discus ready. You must spend a lot of time on them. Thay look so healthy.

01-07-2003, 11:05 AM
Mike: What's the size on your F1 SM? Are they bigger or smaller than their parents? I'm still looking for a respectable size SM after 3 years.
Jimmy.

01-07-2003, 11:39 AM
Jimmy, The second generation are 12-13 months and 5-5.5 inches. The have yet to show signs of spawning. I hope they put on more size. Time will tell.

Wo, They produce plenty of slime for there fry. Don't let anyone tell you different. They were fed a verity of foods when they were growing out. Including astaxanthin (natra-rose) but only when they were young. They have not had any color enhancers for the last 3 months and all of them have held there color, maybe even better. They do throw a precentage of fry 20-30% with bars that seem to go away as they get older.

Hi Michael:

Very excellent picture of mom and kids. You must be expert in discus because most of the discus lover who breed san merah all say that they need a pair of nanny as the same situation for snow white. Can I show your pictures to my friends? Thanks!

01-08-2003, 11:19 AM
Sure you can show them to your friends. You don't need foster parents for any strain/type I know of.

San Merahs / Red Covers are absolutely my favorite. Right now I have 7 and plan on purchasing more ;D ! ! ! Right now they are 3 inches in legth not including the tail and are really coming to color. These guys are going to be my "Special Projects" in the near future as they get older.

Weeze:

Hi, Thanks. I feel lucky too because I am the first one to buy the fries. On the second day they were all gone. (The asians are now crazy for the reds such as red cover, san merah, ica.....etc.) Now, the fries grow a little bigger and they are always eager to eat. One day, I hope they can breed.

Below are the picture of their parents:

I feed them 4-5 times a day only with frozen brine shrimp. I once fed the other grown discus with blood worm and they were crazy about it. But soon I discovered some of my discus are sick. Ever since I never feed them with blood worms. The blood worms in Taipei are considered to be highly poluted and can be internal parasites carriers.

I am considering to move the san merah to a large tank. Right now they live in a 24 liter tank. I do WC once everyday. They seem to be happy and healthy in that small tank.

Wo, those are beautiful pictures!!! I just love your pair!!!

Carol, I saw the picture of your fries. How do you do to let them grow so round. Really nice work. ;D

The 8 san merah are put in a small tank of 24 liters. My friend tell me not to put them in a such small tank. So today I move them to the 3 feet tank devided into two part. With one side of the browns and the other side of san merah juv.

I lost 4 marlboro this week. Due to unware of their early symptom at the beginning. They are 3-4 months old. Just because I focus on the san merah and ignore them. I blame myself for their death. The photo are the survivors.

Hi,Jim and Weezy:

Thanks. I will try omega one flake. Here is the picture of them taken today. They really eat a lot. You should see the hungry expression on their face each time I approach them.

The picture of my lately purchased RSGxLeopard snake fries. They are only 30 days old and look a little behind in size. They are half RSG and half loepard snake. The father is leopard snake and their mother is a yellow based RSG. I am curious about what they look like as adults.
