Hi all, at what stage does the culling process begin. And should it start as soon as 3 weeks freeswimming. The reason I ask is because some of my fry are big and some bigger. Then you have a few that are well for lack of a better word puny tinieweinie Dohhhhhhhh.. ( what to do, what to do ) :) Below is an example picture !!! Thank you all for your help. Jim & Diane ;)

Yep time to cull, not only MR small, but in the secound picture it looks like the one above the small one is missing some of the dorsal fin.
It is easier to cull now than later.

I agree with Dennis, cull them now. Imagine if you think its difficult to cull them now wait till they get older and you start giving them name and watch their different personality, how harder it will be to cull them then.

Cheers,

Chi.

Thanks guys will start doing it now. Man I'm glad to get them examples the first time. You know how hard it was to write them arrows and words on the tank and then wait till they swam in front of them WOW !!!!!!! :)

well you did remember to change the camera angle so the arrows would point right at them right?! ;D

Good Question. I had the same problem and I culled mine at around 2 -3 weeks. Now I only have 10 left out of my batch of 30. I'm just hoping for 5-6 good ones to grow out but I'm not holding my breath on it. I think I need a bigger hatch as this group of 30 is looking like a waste of time.

I had to cull one of my guys this morning.... :'( Trust me, do it now while they are young and before you get attached to them. :'(

Maybe this is not for me. If they where suppose to be dead, they would be. He is fighting his assoff to stay alive between the other bigger fish. If I were close I'd surely take them off your hands.

I'm stil waiting for my discus to start breeding but my angels did. 80 little angels. After 2 months I took the small ones and put them in their own tank. They have now ( 1 month later) catch up with the rest. May be you should try it. It would break my heart to cull any of my fish.

If your not culling, your not doing the fish or the hobbie a favor.

may be so but I won't have to test medicine and stuff on my prize fish.

why not give them to people who want to start with discus. They'll probably kill them before they realise they have to do w/c everyday and save themself a lot of money. If the fishies survive, well good for them. If you don't breed with them u can't do anything to the hobby. Thats my 2 cents. Maybe thats why 2 cents are worthless. :)
