is varing sucsess normal ?

hi,

my first spawn of 250+ eggs from my pair resulted in 8 free swimmers soon to be eaten for a new spawn. then the next spawn produced very few eggs 120+ resulting in 30 babies still doing well, the following spawn was massive 375+ eggs but only having 15 free swimmers. is this a normal thing to have good spawns followed by bad?
or should i be wondering if i have messed something up?

It really depends on the pair , Ive got pairs that will consistently lay 200 + eggs and ive got one pair that laid 200,100,50,27,14,7,3 and last week she laid 1 egg.then she ate the bloody thing.LOL
