Caspias,
DI units are best used as a post filter following an RO unit. They last longest that way. DI units used as a primary water softener (meaning for removing all dissolved solids) will exhaust quickly and have to be replaced or regenerated. Most DI units on the market right now use a type of DOWEX brand mixed bed resin. There are several dozen types of these and they vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. They are vey effective in removing whatever your RO unit leaves behind but not very efficient when it comes to completely softening tap water.

Hope this helps,

Caspias,

My RO unit has 2 stages of dionization directly following the RO stage itself. As Randal stated they do indeed exhaust quickly. I used them primarily for my orchids to eliminate the "spotting" on the leaves. Not as necessary now that I am using the wc waste. I did notice tho that the DI's do not exhaust nearly as quick with the pressure booster and the flush I recently added to my system. I also read that the DI units aid in eliminating chloramine from tap water, where the RO unit alone will not.

Randal of course your comments are always welcome. http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/u/cop.gif
