Nothing like starting out first class.
You really did your home work.
If you do as good raising them as you did chooseing, you will have some out standing fish.

Thanks! We are very excited about them. We have 5 tanks to house them (and maybe some more ;)). Hopefully, we have some future breeders on our hands. They needed about 48 hours to fully acclimate, but now they are devouring food. They are amazing to watch.

They flew over the Pacific. I have a friend in SE Asia who breeds discus.

Hey Nick, Want to introduce me to your friend? Seriously though, I hope you e-mail him this thread. How gratified he will feel to see that all us Discus nuts think so highly of his fishies. I cant remember seeing a "look at my first discus" thread get a response like this.

Wow.

I'll be a sounding board and repeat what has already been said, "what a way to start off a hobby on the right foot. That is first class".

Geez, makes mine looks pretty bad ;D I recalled starting off with 6 Cobalt Discus. Thot that was a great start until I saw yours :P

But really, if you have the cash, why not go all the way...so hats off to you and best of luck with them bunches of fishies.

Cheerio,

Chi.

Thanks for the encouraging replies. We spent hours upon hours upon hours doing our homework, and we are very pleased with the discus. It was an expensive investment, but we didn't want to cut corners this late in the game. Hopefully, they will stay healthy and grow fast! They are currently eating like Piranhas.

That is one remarkable explosion of color. You must be having a blast! Good luck with the new fish and PLEASE keep us up to date on how they are doing!

Does anyone want to offer a quick critique?

How do they rate in your book? What do you see? Shape, Eyes, Color, and whatever else you would use to judge 2-3" fish.

Thanks!

wow Nick....i really like the fish. it looks neat with all those bright colours.
keep us updated. nice to see someone get some nice fish and that they have done their homework .
id love to see pics in a few months. congrats

Shape= B to B+ not bad for small fish. With good care they can easily become A's

Eye to Body= A- to A+

Color = A+ I have breed thousands of discus bro and never seen any that colorful at that size. (Reds) Defiantly not natural color. Hormone or Potent color feeding. :-\ Cross your fingers and hope no internal damage was done.

OK, well then I need to ask more questions. Is it impossible for the 3" reds to have this much color? My friend says no hormones are involved at his farm. How can I be sure? If hormones were used, what can I expect? How long until the color fades? No breeding? Give me the clues on what to look for, and I will report back with pics. I am feeding colorbits, beefheart, ONF1 flakes, and frozen mysis.

Thanks,
Nick

02-05-2003, 01:21 AM
Your new fish do not look 3" to me but photos can some times be deceiving. I doubt anyone would admit to using hormone so asking is kind of pointless? The only one that can tell you is your fish, over time. Don't beat yourself up over it... Go enjoy them. There your first discus ;)

Hi Mike,

What internal damage can these red color enhancers do? Any other long-term adverse side effects?

Rich

02-05-2003, 01:42 AM
Rich, Hormone and color enhancers that hare very high in Iron can severely damage the liver, spleen, and reproductive organs of the fish. When the liver becomes damaged it loses its ability to filter toxins from the blood stream and hampers its ability to metabolize meds.

They get sick easy, don't respond will to medication, small spawns, low hatch rates, and live shortened lives.

This should be another thread :-\

Nick, very nice looking fish especially for your first discus. It looks like you did your homework.

Mike thx for the advice a few days ago on my male with the sore on his head. It looks like it has almost completley healed over now and I threw a sponge on my vacuum and he won't come near it now.

How long before the reds start coloring up? I have a batch of fry that are 45 days old and they have a slight orange tinge to them but not as bright as some other fish I have seen at this age. They are a cross between a blue cobalt x pigeon blood. I'm hoping to get pictures soon so I can post them on the photo page. I just have to wait for my friend to come over again with his digital camera.
