View Full Version : What are their chances???

Hi Guys and Gals.....

My pair of WG x BD's have finally had fry to attatch... Not a BIG spawn but a spawn ;D They're making progress. I was a little concerned as the fry didn't really attatch until day 4, apparently they were grazing on the potho plants. A few pics.....

swimming everywhere, except where they're suppose to be :-\

You can see the babies on the sponge in this pic.

The bbs hatchery was started on day 4 and removed. April told me the fry would likely find their way in.... (and they did )

It's now day 5 ....

Day 4 I removed the spawning cone (the female was cleaning it) in hopes the pair would lose the urge to spawn again...... well, that didn't stop the urge AT ALL .... last night she decided to spawn anyway ... grrrrr.....

The pair now has eggs on the back glass and fry still attatched.

http://images.snapfish.com/3368283523232%7Ffp6%3B%3Dot%3E2327%3D%3A49%3D858%3 Dxroqdf%3E2323374699%3B87ot1lsi

I thought about removing the fry..... I just think it would probably be better if I left them and just hoped they wouldn't be eaten. Today was the first day on bbs and it's really hard to tell weather or not they've eaten any :-\

OK guys.....so what are their chances of raising both spawns????

Sorry to say Beth, From my experiences even if the parents tried raising
the 1st spawn . They will be 9 days older and much larger. Most likley they'll think the newer fry were food.... :'(

IMO I would try to remove the first spawn if they are eating BBS.
Much sucess,
Chuck

off the topic... Can you tell me how you post (attach) more then one picture in one message. when I use the attach it only allows one picture attachement per message box? ??? ???
thanks...... :-*

Nice fish Beth! The WG is beautiful.

It's not a funny situation but your captions really got me.

Good luck with both broods.

Hey Scotz....... I understand Joe (Enchanted Discus) should have some soon ;)

Chuck....... seems I had no choice but to pull the remaining fry from the first spawn..... I pulled the last 8 survivors from the wrath of Mom.... I'll try to keep them alive (I hope I can anyway)...

Guess she needed a bigger spawn to keep her busy :-\

Ralph.... The pair are F1 Wild Green and Blue Diamond crosses. Thanks, I thought it was sorta cute myself ;D

well let us know how it goes beth. id say with a bigger spawn next time..theywill do better. perhaps they werent calling them to them.my father who raised a whole batch and was nice and dark...the next spawn he wouldnt feed and he didnt go dark and he didnt try to collect them and they went wandering. this time..they both collected them when they came off the cone and were dark and they went right to them. yours might also be still learning.

The adults will almost always eat the older fry. They view them as a predator to the new spawn.

chuck, check out the boxes above, under the strickthrough button is insert picture, use that instead of the browser box.

beth, glad to see you posting!
your fish look great, good luck with them. hopefully the next spawn is better at finding mom and dad. as for the others, maybe try the egg mix for artificial rearing if they don't eat the BBS.

good luck!

I personally wouldn't waste my time with 8 fry. It's a lot of work for little gain. I raised 30 fry and I felt that that was a waste of time. They will get it right eventually.

Beth;

Young pairs often spawn 8 - 10 days apart. You don't want them to get used to eating spawns. Next time, I recommend you have a divider available to separate the parents. The spawns will still be able to feed off both parents. Good luck.

Willie

P.S. I agree with Wolf. Never been able to raise a spawn of < 20 frys.

02-13-2003, 12:13 AM
I'd just leave them they will get it right.

Mike

Hi Wolf....

I agree in a sense that it's probably a waste of time for most, but being the hobbiest that I am, even 8 fry will be ok for me to try and raise artifically. I may never try this again but it'll be a new experience for me.

I have quite a bit of time on my hands and am really looking forward to seeing the results of these F2's.

After Mom ate the rest of their sibblings she's decided to eat all the eggs as well...... I'm sure they'll eventually get it right (I hope)

Thanks for all the input Guys....

Good Luck Beth. I hope it didn't sound like I was trying to discourage you. Since you have plenty of free time, it will be fun to try that's for sure.

They'll get the plot eventually..
My favourite pair have finally gotten it after over a year of spawning every 8 days. So perhaps their 30th spawn or so..

Looking great Beth! keep in mind that they will grow a little slower than if on the parents, but thats only until they are eating crushed flake and blackworms, then they'll catch up just fine....

because you have no bio filter in that conatiner,.... be sure to do as many water changes a day as you can. But you should be fine with a few a day.

Hey Beth,

I have my first batch of fry which are 8 days free swimming today. They are from a Cobalt x RT and are still feeding on Dad's sides as well as BBS for a few days. I also only have about 35-45 fry but its fun to watch anyway! Good luck with these guys.

(if Al is right about babies on the parents growing a little faster--this might be the only time in my life I could expect to have Discus grow faster than you! You made us all jealous watching those WGxBD parents grow up so well. Well maybe it will last a week....lol).

Good luck,

Pat

Whoa Beth,
Are these the fish in your question to me on the other thread? If so, is it safe for me to assume you bought these from Cary, who bought them from Joe, who bought them from Tan Chee Lok? Wow, this is confusing..ha,ha,ha... ::) ::) ::)
btw, good luck on those frys. They look good and remember I'm first in line..you owe me that much for setting me up..lol..

02-17-2003, 10:58 AM
ROFLMAO :funny: Pat

Good Luck with your fry ;) Congratulations

Runner.....

Yes, those are the fish in question..... and Yes, they came from Cary which originated from Tan Chee Lok :o

come on now... first in line..... for setting you up ;D that line just keeps getting longer and longer. I hope one day in the near future I can raise enough of these to disperse them to all who are wanting them ;)

Beth

02-17-2003, 11:29 AM
Beth,
LOL, thanks, I'll now go back to the end of the line..and I won't hold my breath..not that I think you can't get enough frys to go around, but I think the end of the line is 5 blocks long. ;D oh, my next option: I'll go to Joe instead.. ;D

Looking good Beth. I have a question about the auto brine shrimp feeder. Does it work pretty well? I go to school in the morning so I don't have time to deal with the brine shrimp, would you recommend that in my kind of situation? Thanks :)

Bruce

02-18-2003, 09:28 AM
Hi Bruce...

The reason I pulled the bbs hatchery is the fry were so small they managed to find their way in through the screen that allows the bbs to escape.

I think it's a neat hatchery, as long as the fry are not able to get in ;) I've used it in the past with angelfish fry..... for some reason those never managed to find their way in.
I'm guessing that angelfish fry aren't as attracted to movement and dark colours as much as Discus fry :-\

If you do choose to use a bbs hatchery in the tank.... make sure the fry can't get in through the screen ;)
