UV Sterilizers

I have noticed breeders using UV Sterilizers hooked up to their tanks filters here in NZ, can anyone tell me about these as i know nothing about them .

Hi,
UV sterilizers pass aquarium water by a Ultaviolet light. This light kills all living things. Some believe this helps eliminate or control bacteria and parasites in the aquarium.
I have good water from a city that uses chlorine, and other chemicals to clean my water supply so I don't feel the need to use a UV.

However in other cities or countries maybe the water supply is not so free of pathogens and a UV light may help.
