Hey fish nuts, here are a few pics of my newly aquired Madiera "blue" Discus. I only have two, They are in a 20 gall qt tank waiting for a house move. They are sharing with a stunted sunset tiger/red dragon what ever you want to call it. I put the blue in inverted commas because I think the fish are Axelrodi and not Haraldi. What do you guys think?

Gorgeous Ivan, they look like axelrodi to me.

Beautiful animals. They also look to me like brown discus (S.aequifasciata axelrodi).
It is amazing how little we know about wild discus varieties and their distribution. The Madeira river is closer to blue discus areas than to browns, and from what I hear the term "Madeira" is used almost as loosely as the term "Alenquer".
Beautiful fish again, axelrodi -looking to my inexperienced eye.

Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Francisco.

hi all thanx for the kind words ;D
The reason I think they are axelrodi, Haraldi from that area usually have nice blue striations and are royal blue. I'd like to see Dave Webber or some other wild discus nut to post on here about them. No striations on these fish. I love 'em, feisty little suckers.
As to showing signs of opposite sex. Not yet, tho' one is ruling the roost. I don't think they are that old. Will be able to tell in a few months I think.

I was looking again at your fish, and notice something I didn't see before.
It is clearer in the 4th picture you posted, the smaller one with a single fish.
That fish has 2 incomplete bars that makes him look as if with more bars than the standard 9. The 4th bar doesn't extent all the way down, and then there is a bar just before the one thru the caudal peduncle, that is also incomplete. As a result, the fish looks as if with 10 bars. The question is, are both sides of the fish like that ? Sometimes, incomplete bars in wild discus occur only on one side, less frequently in both.
While some purists may call this a defect, I think it is cool, makes for a "special" fish (in my mind) and may make for some interesting fish to breed. Of course some one would also say the opposite: that those are reasons not to breed it. To each its own. Nice fish. I have a Manacapuru blue with an incomplete bar as well.
Cheers, Francisco.

Hey Francisco, no they are just like that down one side. I don't mind it like that either. I have a few fish with incomplete bars. Not a problem to me!!
BK, I have posted pics of my other Discus already, they will be somewhere.
Here are some of them.
