Sponge or not sponge

HI

I am going to start a community take is well as my bare tanks , i use sponge on the intake of a cannister filter with my bare tanks , should i do the same with the community tank which will have plants and gravel in it.

I put a sponge wherever I can get water to flow through it.....
but then, I'm an overfilter junky.... :bandana:
