moving discus

hello

I hope I can get some tips on moving my 4 dicsus to a bigger tank. My old tank is very stable and I'm afraid moving to the new one would make my discus uncomfortable.

any ideas?

Hi Carman,

Just make sure that the new tank has a running, cycled filter and has been running for sometime before you indroduce the fish to the new tank so that ph has stabilized. Make sure that PH and temperatures are the same (basically stick to your normal routine for water changes and don't do anything differently with your larger tank than you did with your original tank). Provided that conditions are similar, they will be fine.

If perameters are different then you could try acclimating them to the new water by adding some of the new water to the old tank for instance.

They may take afew days to get used to the new suroundings though. If they are healthy they will be fine.

I'm thinking about moving 20g-30g of water in the old tank to the new one. is that a good idea?

Carman, Moving water is somewhat beneficial, but IMO, a sponge will do best. To be honest, I never worry about cycling and have placed up to 40 6" Discus in a new 75 gal holding tank for up to two weeks without problems. The relevance has everything to do with both frequency and volume of water changes. Joe ;)

just update:

I got my 4 discus and a gold nugget in the new tank and they're all happy. I moved about 20g of water. Everything seems to be fine.

Good, I bet they like their new tank. Be sure to check ammonia levels for the first several days just to be on the safe side.
