I'm just curious as to what size a fish would have to be (assuming shape and all other variables are fine) in order for you more selective breeders to breed a fish. I've just had some fish pair up at 4.5-5" and am wondering if these guys are too small to give me some good fry. I know a lot of you out there have bread many a brood, so tell me how big your fish have to be in order for you to breed them.

PS - I'm not talking about when they reach a certain size in growth, but as a minimum size for adults.

Hi,

You may get some eggs. But the male may be to small to be fertile. How old are the pair? The male is usually fertile after 18months, but sometime sooner.

You have probably found that the female tends to dominate the pair!

My pairs are 6-6.5 inches in length, are both fertile.

Thanks

Simon

The male is a runt...he's about 5" and will grow no more. The female is smaller.

Can you still have a runt at 5"??? I thought it was reserved for 3" and less.... BTW how did this happen???

I guess the correct wording should be Stunted. He's definately not as big as he could/should be, but he was at the bottom of the pecking order.
